About Michael Paul Krug
I am proud to call myself an Architect - I have the schooling, work experience, and licensure to support the claim.Practicing Architecture is a complex endeavor, with so many underlying facets to balance...I am committed to carrying out our SmithGroup brand promise to design a better future. For each project, I need to understand the vision from the perspective of the client, as well as the community, in whatever form these groups take on. Along with this, I must give voice to the inanimate object - the building/site we design - so it can be heard as it tells us what it wants to be. I am proud to call myself a Passionate Advocate, for the client and community vision, and for the inanimate object we bring into this world.I am committed to practicing architecture, both for me and for my colleagues, in a way that does not ebb away at our personal time and our mental wellness. I do so while working to exceed work product expectations, and meet project timelines. To that end, I am compelled to mention...I believe the term work-life balance is a misnomer; it is disconcerting how it has taken root in our society as a goal to strive for. Unfortunately, these two ill-fitting words were connected together to describe this goal, seemingly because both are one syllable and easy to say. Balance is a harmonious arrangement or proportion of elements. The term work-life balance then alludes to the idea that 'work' and 'life' are two elements to harmonize, which is incredibly false. Your LIFE is the base condition, it is the matrix in which all other elements of your existence fit into. We cannot advocate that 'work' and 'life' are pitted against each other, and if you are 'working' you are not 'living'. My concern for the inaccuracy of this term does not mean the pursuit for life balance is not important; it certainly is. My concern is the true thing to be pursued, and how to pursue it, is obscured because of poorly chosen words. What we are truly pursuing is a balance between our professional and personal realms. And on that balance beam, with those two realms on either end, the triangular-shaped fulcrum beneath (imagine the playground's teeter-totter) is LIFE. We also need to recognize the true balancing element to work is leisure, and both these elements can and should be found in both the personal and professional realms.I am proud to call myself a Passionate Advocate, for the mental and physical wellness of my colleagues, and for their pursuit in finding holistic fulfillment in their professional career.
Listed skills include Architectural Design, Sustainable Design, Architecture, Graphic Design, and 5 others.

Soon after I started work here, I completed my licensing exams and became a registered Architect (trivia: because I started my exams while in Chicago, my license is registered in the state of Illinois). Primarily worked on retail shopping mall projects, both local and abroad. Of note, developed interior designs for the CrossIron Mills Mall in Calgary, Alberta, Canada, including heavily themed environmental graphics and specialty fabrications. This was my first introduction to incorporating specialty installations into architectural design, and their ability to impact the feel and amplify the character of a place. This remains a heavy influence of how I think of placemaking today. In the end, was laid off due to the economic downturn's impact on project workload. I remember the day I was given the news, I felt some sort of numb. I felt like I needed to regroup before heading home, so I stopped by a local restaurant for a milkshake. This began my mental recalibration (note: milkshakes significantly help this process). Around 10 weeks later, I found my next opportunity that I remain with today... Show less
Junior Architect
After graduating from UofM with my Masters degree, I took a 6-week road trip out west with two college friends (shout out to the Oldsmobile Alero, thank you GM!). I found a spot at SCB, working primarily on high-rise residential projects, which were satisfying, complex puzzles to solve. My focus was layout design, technical design, and design coordination, while working with the project designer to develop both the interior and exterior form and aesthetic. The Heritage at Millennium Park (Chicago, IL) and One Rincon Hill (San Francisco, CA) were the two projects that took the majority of my focus, and am proud to have had an important role in bringing them into existence. Architectural Intern
Started working with Hobbs+Black after I transferred from WMU (Kalamazoo) to UofM (Ann Arbor) to start my architectural curriculum. Office was in a beautifully restored stone church. I had a chance to work with good people and learn more about the architectural profession. Once again: met good people, some I would (do) work with again at SmithGroup!
Architectural Intern
First job in the architectural profession! Performed odd jobs, including work in the blueprint room where I experienced that ammonia-filled blueprint process before it disappeared from the profession. Also worked on projects, in AutoCAD. Worked full-time during the summers and part-time during school at WMU. Met good people, some I would (do) work with again at SmithGroup!
