As the Senior Program Associate, I am responsible for research, writing and project deliverables in a partner funded project aiming to introduce policy changes for reducing anaemia in mothers and children. This involves collaborating with the Central Government at the Ministry of Health and Family Welfare (MoHFW) and Niti Aayog ( the Govt of India's policy think tank) for framing regulatory processes to address public health concerns. My day-to-day activities involve researching scientific and public health topics, setting deliverables for my team, coordinating meetings with the Government and achieving end goals through negotiation, strategy, stakeholder engagement and program management.

I was instrumental in initiating the creation of International Student Liaisons positions across the various Departments of the Temerty Faculty of Medicine, which lacked this position. Following this, I helped in bringing these representatives together to advocate for international students and their issues, resulting in creating more organized handbooks for the departments as well as to aid in acquiring a grant by the Dean's office to be implemented in Fall 2023 to for attracting, retaining and supporting current and incoming international graduate students.

Working at India's most reputed institution in Science in the lab of Prof. Annapoorni Rangarajan, research at IISc has shaped my outlook and helped me develop expertise in a broad range of methodologies ranging from well-known procedures like immunoblotting, PCR, Protein and nucleic acid isolation, Immunophenotyping to cutting edge techniques like Flow cytometry, Bright field Imaging, Immunohistochemistry, qRT PCR, among others.The primary project I worked on was to identify the elevated propensity of breast cancer markers in Indian Women compared to normal breast tissue. This involved liaisoning with the Department of Health (Govt of Karnataka) and medical practitioners through association with the Kidwai Cancer Institute, Bangalore. My work involved collecting post-surgical tumor samples from breast cancer patients, followed by RNA isolation and quantification of cancer markers (PD1 and PDL1) in these tissues.The results of this study were quantified and statistical analyses were done on them to publish a peer-reviewed article highlighting the differential expression levels of PD1 and PDL1 markers in Indian breast cancer patients.doi: 10.4274/ejbh.galenos.2021.2021-5-2

My research internship in the lab of Dr. Benu Brata Das involved performing several Molecular Biology techniques such as SDS-PAGE, Western blotting, Polymerase Chain Reaction for DNA amplification, Comet assays, and drug-response assays, to understand the role of an inhibitor Campthotecin in preventing DNA damage repair and thus have anti-cancer activity.This study led to a peer-reviewed publication, highlighting the therapeutic potential of campthothecin, which was awarded by a Wellcome Trust Grant for continued research on the same.

My responsibilities in the lab of Dr. Mitali Chatterjee included handling and performing basic techniques of immunology like SDS-PAGE, immunophenotyping through FACS, Western Blotting, and spectrophotometry. Through his project, I Iearnt to record and report cases of Kala Azar and Post Kala Azar Visceral Leishmaniasis (PKVL) by analysing patient blood samples for markers of infections, microscopic testing of parasite load counts and molecular biology analysis of serum and blood samples to test differential expression of proteins in healthy versus infected individuals.The report formulated through this study was submitted to the West Bengal Health Ministry by the Principal Investigator, which led to the implementation of better screening protocols at all Govt hospitals for PKVL.
