Most people seem surprised that the two things I’ve dedicated the most time to are computer programming and competitive public speaking. They appear completely unrelated, but to my brain the logic behind writing code and the logic behind communicating ideas are incredibly similar. They both require you to first understand your intended goal, and then to work through the steps that will lead to the desired outcome.Putting so much emphasis on these two skills which rarely go together gives me a unique perspective. As a UX programmer, my primary task was functional prototyping based on wireframes. However, my communication background meant I was in the perfect position to go beyond prototyping and get directly involved in UX research and user testing. Because I was qualified to do both, I was able to synthesize the feedback directly instead of receiving it secondhand.I also really enjoy data analytics. So much so that I cannot even pick up a hobby without feeling compelled to run the numbers. As a member of my collegiate speech team, I kept a record of results throughout the entire year of competition and used it to see if I could draw meaningful correlations to results throughout the year and results at the national tournament. Recently, I decided to try playing Pokemon competitively and when I couldn’t find the resources I wanted showing competitive data analytics, I felt compelled to create them myself. It led me create an entire website for that purpose and share it as a community resource.
