About Kurt Lutz

I am interested in using ecological field data, molecular techniques, and statistical analysis to understand patterns of disease transmission in natural systems. • Purdue University
    Ph.D Candidate
Purdue University Aug 2022 - Present
My research combines ecological field observations, molecular analysis, and statistical inference to test hypotheses about community disease dynamics.
  • Applied Technology & Science (A-T-S)
    Biologist
    Applied Technology & Science (A-T-S) Jun 2020 - Jun 2022
    San Francisco Bay Area
I supported Bioregional Habitat Restoration projects in the San Francisco bay area, including multiple SFPUC-owned BHR sites by performing various biological surveys including wildlife, vegetation, hydrology, and rangeland assessments.  I also provided contractor oversight and guidance for the protection of sensitive resources within restoration sites during public utility projects. In addition to field activities, I use collected data from habitat assessments to contribute to various reports that are sent to clients, including monthly and annual reporting. I wrote documents outlining the risk of amphibian pathogens in California watersheds, and mitigation measures to take to prevent further decline of Special-status amphibians including the California tiger salamander (Ambystoma californiense), California red-legged frog (Rana drayonii), and the Foothill yellow-legged frog (Rana boylii).
  • San Francisco State University
    Graduate Teaching Associate
San Francisco State University Jan 2018 - Jun 2020
As a graduate teaching assistant (GTA), I taught my own lab sections of both lower division and upper division biology courses (BIOL 240: General Biology II, and BIOL 482: Ecology). This includes lecturing, facilitating lab activities, writing and grading tests, and providing mentorship to undergraduate students. I was awarded "Most Outstanding GTA" for two consecutive years in recognition of exceptional teaching ability and reliability.Whilst teaching BIOL 482: Ecology, I served as the lab coordinator, performing tasks such as communicating with lecturing faculty about the lab classes and ensuring consistency between different lab sections.
  • San Francisco State University
    Undergraduate/Graduate Student
San Francisco State University Jan 2016 - Jun 2020
    San Francisco Bay Area
Lab research in the Vredenburg lab centers around global population decline of amphibians caused by the chytrid fungus Batrachochytrium dendrobatidis (Bd). My primary project is a collaboration with the consulting firm H.T. Harvey & Associates. We aim to perform a survey of potential amphibian disease threat to a collection of meta-communities in the Los Vaqueros watershed and conservation lands. The study involved collecting skin swabs of individuals, and detecting traces of Bd using an extremely sensitive qPCR assay developed by Boyle et al. (2004). In addition, we are also using a cell-free growth inhibition assay testing the ability of cutaneous skin bacteria to slow down growth of Bd and thus prevent potential high infection loads in animals. This project involves two species that are listed as state and federal species of concern, and thus required major communication with USFWS and CDFW to gain permits to perform swab sampling.
