In addition to leading a team of three to successfully reach our $3.5 million campaign goal, I also initiated several operational projects to improve the working conditions of the Development Department.Using existing on-site surplus office dividers, and with the pre-approval of all staff and the facilities department, I redesigned the open-office floor plan to allow the entire development staff to work on the same floor of the building, work alongside functional team members, and I increased working space for our Administrative Support staff. I also reestablished a meeting room--that had become a dumping ground for unwanted items--to allow for impromptu meetings and project space.I wrote a detailed report to show that the effective cost of the daily computer network and software outages significantly outweighed the costs of upgrading the hardware and network, allowing for a full systems upgrade a year later.I also wrote a detailed report to educate management on the costs associated with the weekly two-hour full-staff meetings, and the traditional reporting meeting format. The organization switched to a monthly full-staff meeting and changed the meeting format to one of planning and problem-solving discussions.I worked with the development team to clean out the campaign supply room, develop a better inventory system for campaign materials and did away with longstanding practices such as the Balloon Requisition Form.

Pacific Northwest

Co-Founder and co-leader of the band Tall Jazz, a trio of vibes, bass, and drums. During my 12 years with the group, it averaged 150 performances a year throughout the Pacific Northwest of the USA. Tall Jazz released six critically acclaimed recordings and received endorsements from the Oregon Arts Commission, Metropolitan Arts Commission, Jazz Society of Oregon, Young Audiences, and was later inducted into the Jazz Society of Oregon’s Jazz Hall of Fame. I was responsible for creating the band around a business model where an equal amount of time and effort would be put into weekly rehearsals as would the business side of managing the company. I created the band's brand name and created the group's original Winter Jazz concerts, which led to three recordings and a popular annual concert series that continued for 24 years. I handled the group’s national radio marketing in dozens of public radio markets around the US. I also produced monthly newsletters, brochures, and strategic advertising buys and performed many other publicist duties. I also set up and managed much of the distribution of the group’s recordings and inventory.

In just 18 months the staff and I reversed over a decade of dysfunctional policies and procedures and turned an atmosphere of failure into one of celebration. Working cooperatively under my leadership we created positive changes that led to some significant accomplishments including:• 70% reduction in time devoted to annual licensing inspections. • 36% reduction in client turnover. • 120% reduction in staff turnover. • 17% reduction in non-recoverable account balances. • 1% reduction in the annual operating budget. • 25% increase in employee wages. • 60% increase in client financial assistance. • 25% facility renovation. • One member of the program's management team was successfully promoted into the position of Program Director. • The program's budget achieved a reserve for the first time on record.

For the first 2.5 school years, I taught beginning percussion each morning at the Middle Schools that feed into Jefferson, and intermediate percussion and drum set in the afternoons to students at the high school.The final year I delivered the curriculum I wrote for a pre-college level course called "A Survey In Ethnic Music". In addition to classroom studies, the course required listening to locally produced ethnic music radio broadcasts, and featured monthly live performances that were open to the whole school that included professional musicians from the community and the school's faculty.

Residential Outdoor Youth Camps In Oregon

I worked 5 different seasons for Outdoor School, most of them at Camp Howard. In a nutshell, a Senior Counselor is one of six people on staff responsible for making sure that the other 120+ people have a safe and successful week at Outdoor School. At the time each week started at noon on Sunday and concluded around 6:00 PM on Friday. It was one of the most rewarding and demanding jobs I've ever had.I've completed 37 weeks of Outdoor School and always worked under the nickname "Jazz Man". A song I composed is still performed each week by camp staff as part of closing ceremonies.

During 1990, the Oregon Zoo closed its Children's Zoo without a clear plan in place for the future of its Summer Youth Volunteer program. In the spring of 1991 I developed a new youth volunteer program called ZooTeens. I designed a program based on the responses from 82 one-on-one interviews I had conducted with former youth volunteers. That first summer the program accomplished:• 200% increase in volunteer participation • 85% reduction in volunteer turnover • 25% staffing costs/needs replaced by the TeenLeaders elementFrom its beginnings with just over 150 volunteers, the ZooTeen program continues to operate in its original educational structure now serving more than 300 youth annually. The then-controversial peer-leadership element I created for the ZooTeens, has received Mutual of Omaha's Wildlife Heritage Center's Award of Excellence twice for youth leadership involvement. Honorably Discharged from the United States Marine Corps after four years of active service and two years in-active reserve. During my tenure as a Marine I completed both the Armed Forces School of Music and the Noncommissioned Officers Leadership School at the top of my class. I was also a rifle expert (third award) and received a good conduct medal.I was a member of the United States Marine Corps Band where I performed D&B corps style drumming for the USMC marching band, orchestral percussion in a 40 piece wind band, and drum set for a 20 piece big band, a 10 piece top 40 band, a jazz sextet, and Dixieland band. In 1984 I began moonlighting in the local night club circuit playing jazz, blues, 50’s, and soul music three to six nights a week. From 1984 until I finished my tour with the Marine Band, I was averaging 12 performances a week.
