Youth Programs Intern
826 Boston is a nonprofit youth writing and publishing organization that empowers traditionally underserved students ages 6-18 to find their voices, tell their stories, and gain communication skills to succeed in school and in life. Their services are structured around the understanding that great leaps in learning can happen with one-on-one attention and that strong writing skills are fundamental to future success. As a Youth Programs Intern, I joined 826 Boston’s Out-Of-School-Time Programs Team, supporting staff in tutoring, program recruitment, maintaining program logistics, communicating with parents, editing/organizing student writing for publication, and tracking and entering data. In addition to supporting students and teachers with writing instruction, I also had the opportunity to pitch and actualize a long-term project of planning in-person events during the summer, which I led with the mentorship of a staff supervisor.
Project Intern
The Forest Foundation provides summer internships at Non-Profit organizations in the Greater Boston area. The foundation supports the students in leadership and professional development, grant writing, community problem solving, public work, and policy discussion throughout the summer. I worked with a team of three other Forest Foundation Interns to research, write and successfully propose a grant for a non-profit organization in the Greater Boston Area.
Marketing And Media Coordinator
I helped brainstormed activities that we could have especially in virtual spaces, and marketed and advertised the events we agreed on. I created flyers, managed social media accounts and managed the RSVP list to make the events run smoothly.
Program Coordinator
I helped come up with a resource guide for incoming international first year students, plan and help out in the communal events that the ISO hosts during the year.
Remote Sensing Research Assistant
Work with data analysis and data investigation. Sift through data results of a survey conducted in the southern highlands of Tanzania investigating the activities of Medium Tree Growers and farm service providers.
Language In Motion Student Staff
Language in Motion (LiM) is an educational collaboration that connects Middlebury’s international, study abroad, and upper level language students with Addison County elementary, middle, and high school teachers, students, and classrooms. As a student staff member (and a presenter too), I helped coordinate support and training for Middlebury College students to prepare and deliver lessons that promote global awareness, intercultural competence, and world language acquisition. I also set up debriefs to go through presentations and partook in a Racial Equity workshop to help brainstorm ways in which LiM in Middlebury could be more intentional with regards to upending racial bias.
Resident Assistant / First Year Counselor
First Year Counselors (FYC) at Middlebury College serve as mentors to the First-Year studentsin their community and lead a health, safe reopening on campus, given the COVID19 pandemic. Specifically, they are expected to foster the intellectual and personaldevelopment of first-year students and serve as the bridge that connects these first-yearstudents to other support services on campus. FYCs must have a concrete understanding of the network of available resources on campus and a willingness to channel students to those resources, which is especially important in the wake of this pandemic.
Language Tables Waiter (German & Swahili)
Apart from waiting and serving on tables, I also helped the attendees with their language practice by speaking to them only in the language assigned to their table.
Virtual Leader
Connect with incoming students and share reminders and resources for successful integration into the school.
Intern
Worked with recent high school graduates in crafting their college essays through workshops, reviews and 1:1 sessions.
Self-Designed Creative Writing Project
My self-designed project is to write a collection of fictional short stories that will, in my own creative way, further the discourse on the complexity of the Kenyan identity, especially in the context of the globalized world. This project would be a way for me to investigate and address themes dear to me, which include the complexities of relationships between Kenyans of different identities as well as what happens when these relationships are tested by unavoidable circumstances, such as the Covid-19 crisis. My stories, after consultation with my supervisor, will focus on what it means to be raised Kenyan, what it means to belong and what happens to this sense of belonging and identity in the midst of a pandemic.
Story Intern
Worked with a team of three Community Friends' Story Interns to reach out to current and former mentors and mentees, ask them meaningful questions and record their answers, and synthesize the dozens of stories gathered into a coherent and share-able finished product.
