I was able to participate in the 2013 Four Directions Summer Research Program sponsored by Harvard Medical School and the Brigham and Women’s Hospital, a program especially for Native American and Alaska Native college students. Through the program I worked on a faculty mentored research project through the Pulmonary Division at Brigham and Women’s Hospital studying the link between Fatty Liver Disease and Metabolic Syndrome in human subjects with Chronic Obstructive Pulmonary Disease and/or a history of heavy smoking.I presented our findings in oral and poster presentation sessions at the New England Science Symposium at Harvard Medical School, the University of Washington Undergraduate Research Symposium, and the UW School of Public Health Undergraduate Research Symposium. Through my involvement I was also able to attend weekly seminars discussing Native American health disparities, learn more about medical and public health careers involved in American Indian health, and meet current professionals working on improving health of minority populations.
