Hi there, I’m Kyle, an experienced public-sector management consultant, analyst, and firm believer that you can ‘measure anything’, with a little bit of creativity and analytic rigor. I’ve also been a military intelligence soldier and a big firm consultant, and picked up a JD along the way. The thread that ties each of these professional roles together is that each seeks, in its own way, to reduce uncertainty. As a military intelligence soldier your mission is to help the commander divine the enemy’s intent on the battlefield by narrowing down the immense range of possibilities to the enemy’s most likely or most dangerous course of action. In the data-driven, empirical consulting of the type we do in my practice at IBM, organizations seek to understand the value that arises from large investments in areas where payoff is indirect or non-obvious. And in the law, we apply arcane sets of rules to a client’s particular set of facts so that they, a judge, or even an opponent can see the most fitting outcome.Doing this effectively requires an understanding of the domain in which the questions exist, the ability to use some standard analytic tools, and good old fashioned communication. Doing it efficiently also requires the ability to formulate hypothesis, the nuanced insight to know when an answer is good enough, and the realization that you “don’t have to know everything to know something”.Nowadays, I use Excel, GIS, and just enough SQL and R that I feel honest mentioning them, to handle and analyze a variety of datasets from sensor data to unstructured text. Better yet, I work in small teams, with curious people who are happy to debate the merits of chart types, will spend an afternoon cleaning line feeds from rows of data, and get animated about the best method to code new judgments, all so that we can help someone make a better decision, understand an issue more clearly, or strip away preconceived assumptions. Its good work – work I never expected to be engaged in – but am eager to continue.
