Working with yeast and plants to develop new tools for synthetic biology

At the OMRF I completed my graduate training, benefiting from the high level of science, abundant resources and state-of-the-art technology to perform powerful new experiments. This setting showed the importance of new technologies in improving research in life sciences and the translation of this research to a clinical setting. I also continued improving my skills in writing and presentations, to both scientists and non-scientists, reaching a high level of proficiency. Throughout my time as a graduate student I have become an expert in yeast and bacterial genetics, common biochemical protein isolation and modifications, and fluorescence microscopy, using computer modeling to obtain super resolution. Concurrently I have mastered the ability to create testable hypotheses of molecular systems, design experiments to disprove these hypotheses, and use analytical methods to confirm the results. In addition I have acquired proficiencies with common software, such as Microsoft Office and Adobe products, as well as hardware issues for either MAC or PC.

I was a Graduate Student at Tufts University Sackler School: Program in Genetics. I joined the lab of Dean Dawson whose current focus is the segregation of chromosomes in Saccharomyces cerevisiae meiotic divisions. He moved his lab to Oklahoma in 2006 and I went with him to finish my research and obtain my PhD.

My internship with Commerce was an introduction to the role of Government in increasing the bioscience sector in Oklahoma City. Ongoing projects include finding and directing new startups to funding opportunities, recruiting trained former Oklahomans back to the state, and building a membership group to be a primary networking resource for local biotech companies, as well as an educational source for promoting the importance of biotech to the public and elected officials. In this position I participated in meetings pertaining to biotech, and worked with the research department to obtain and analyze census data. A specific project I worked on was preparing a summary of census data focused on population, education, and core business sector statistics, comparing the progress of Oklahoma over recent years to neighboring states, and states with similar economies.
