Scientific operations to include launching/recovering the DSV Alvin utilizing US Navy LARS system. Deploying ROVs, CTDs, scientific gear baskets, and coring instruments over the side. launching/recovering drifter buoys and ARGOS floats over the side. Liaison for contractors responsible for safety equipment renewals and contractor specific installations. As the Communications Electronics Technician onboard the R/V Atlantis I was responsible mainly for GMDSS equipment periodic (daily, weekly, monthly) testing and upkeep, Fire Detection System, UHF and VHF radio programming/maintenance, and Bridge Electronic Equipment troubleshooting and interfacing. I reported directly to the Captains, Chief Mates, and Chief Engineer for projects that led me into electrical troubleshooting… Show more As the Communications Electronics Technician onboard the R/V Atlantis I was responsible mainly for GMDSS equipment periodic (daily, weekly, monthly) testing and upkeep, Fire Detection System, UHF and VHF radio programming/maintenance, and Bridge Electronic Equipment troubleshooting and interfacing. I was a major supplemental role for the bridge navigational watch. I reported directly to the Captains, Chief Mates, and Chief Engineer for projects that led me into electrical troubleshooting, computer networking, and system installations. I installed, ran wire, and terminated a UHF repeater system to improve internal communications. I also installed new computers, backing them up, and getting them added to the immense network systems onboard a research vessel. I designed and built an LED light fixture to replace an old desk mounted incandescent on the chart table on the bridge learning how to use freeCAD and a 3d printer. Among various jobs I was doing, when someone needed an extra hand I threw myself in the mix. I worked alongside the engineers troubleshooting air handling units, PLCs, and finding grounds. I worked on deck supporting the science operations, launching small boats, and helped with crane picks alongside the ABs and Bosun. Adding to my experiences later in shipyard, I oversaw and helped troubleshoot the installation of a new Siemens Cerberus Pro Fire Detection System while the old system was completely overhauled, working alongside contractors and shipyard electricians. This was a major stepping stone as I learned a lot in this position as a dynamic part of a crew doing very specialized work and was able to come back to the vessel as third mate. Show less
