About Kyle Lundberg
I became an aerospace engineer because I love the challenge and cameraderie of working with a team of motivated individuals to overcome problems on the bleeding edge of human capability. Designing robust, efficient, and safe systems that operate in the toughest environments on and beyond earth is my passion, and I go to all lengths to deliver hardware that works the first time. Spaceflight rarely affords second chances. In my work, I apply my broad knowledge of aerospace systems to create avionics and related vehicle/test article support systems that meet the needs of all stakeholders in the global system design. I've coordinated development of systems across teams with members seperated by pandemic restrictions, on opposite coasts, and from multiple engineering disciplines and delivered products that meet requirements on-time, every time. I thrive in fast-moving environments and use my understanding of the system as a whole to ensure my system is solving the right problems. We do it right the first time so we only need to do it once.As a life long space nerd, I'm excited by the current state of the aerospace with missions to the Moon, Mars, and worlds beyond. I'm always looking for the next great challenge and opportunity to work with teams of like-minded, motivated individuals to do what younger me could only dream of looking through a telescope as a child. Spaceflight brings out the best in humanity, and the tightest-knit teams I've ever had the pleasure of being on.

Kyle Lundberg work experience
A career timeline built from the work history available for this profile.
Data Acquisition And Controls Engineer
As a Data and Controls engineer, I ensured test stand readiness and supported operations for the Aeon 1, Aeon Vac, and initial Aeon R development and qualification testing. Additionally, I acted as the test team PoC for all avionics hardware integration with test systems, and designed, built, and supported the Terran 1 launch site vehicle support infrastructure. • As the avionics point of contact, I became familiar with engine and stage-level avionics hardware and harnessing, and on many occasions would personally execute repairs of dev articles in-situ, preventing multiple-day testing delays from returning hardware to California for repair • By communicating and coordinating design requirements and operational realities between Factory, Test, and Launch site teams, I ensured the design of vehicle electrical support equipment met the changing needs of Terran 1 and handled installation and activation, crucial to bringing LC-16 online for launch. • On a day-to-day basis, I worked with a team of DACS engineers to handle the operational support of engines, including specifying and coordinating the installation of pressure transducers, thermocouples, RTDs, strain gauges, load cells, and other instrumentation as required • Beyond my regular duties, I frequently supported critical company milestones by assisting in designing and coordinating flight-like harnessing and proxy systems for test articles, filling a gap in available engineering capacity.
Avionics Hardware Lead
During my senior year as the first YJSP Avionics Hardware Lead, I guided a subteam of 25 students through design, CDR, PDR, and first prototype manufacture of the flight avionics system and ground data and controls system. • Using my knowledge of propulsion and avionics systems, I laid out a systems architecture with team stakeholders in propulsion and flight dynamics, and created the architecture that would fly on Subscale in 2023. • Drawing on experience from my internship, I taught 25 students to use Altium Designer and design robust and entirely-custom circuit boards in 9 months, while creating recordings and tutorials that enabled future students to achieve the same. • Over the course of one semester, I personally designed a flight and ground data acquisition system, while managing the teams developing four interoperating boards of the flight avionics stack to produce our first full-system prototype.
Avionics Data And Control Systems Intern
During my internship, I supported Aeon 1 test operations, contributed GSE hardware designs saving hundreds of man-hours of technician time, prototyped avionics hardware, and automated site weather warnings. • Designed and manufactured custom PCBs supporting intrinsically safe sensors such as pressure trandsucers, thermocouples, RTDs, and limit switches, saving hundreds of hours by eliminating labor-intensive terminal block designs during stand build-outs • Cross-trained with the Avionics team during COVID shutdown designing dev boards for flight designs, becoming familiar with Altium designer and saving time for other avionics engineers • Automated video data offload using Python scripts, cutting export time by hours per test and enabling faster analysis and test turnaround • Wrote a Python script parsing weather alerts from NASA and sending them live via company chat using a REST API, allowing for real time lightning warnings on employee computers and mobile devices
