Research conducted on tubular material systems consisting of assemblies of interlocking building blocks or formed sheet metal structures. Assembled tube geometry is embedded in finite element code to predict load response and failure characteristics. Assemblies of interlocking blocks are also 3D printed and subject to indentation experiments. Assembled material architecture is shown to grant enhanced energy absorption capabilities. Forming simulations of corrugated sheet metal tubes allow residual stress state and damage to be considered in final loading scenarios. The influence of corrugation geometry is also considered.
