I work one-on-one with multiple PIs in several areas of study, from genotype-based clinical guidelines to simulation training for ED residents. In my main role, I enroll patients from the emergency room and conduct solo visits where I work to manage their hypertension. Engaging with providers and their patients in this setting has challenged me to broaden my clinical knowledge. Through this work and my previous research experience, I’ve become well-versed in clinical research and was able to identify and amend critical flaws in study methodology. I’ve also promoted efficiency by streamlining data collection and analysis by integrating with our EHR system to save resources.

As Student Director, I oversee all divisions in the organization, and lead preceptors and students during clinic evenings. I am in charge of identifying the needs of both our patients and of our student teams that see them and ensuring they are all met. Over the course of a single visit, I will engage with the patient, their multidisciplinary student team, their provider, and a care coordinator to meet the patient's multifaceted needs.

My role is to teach advanced science content, critical thinking, and test-taking skills in a small classroom setting. Classes meet twice a week and begin with a Socratic-style lecture. It forces me to remain engaged with a broad range of topics, such as organic chemistry, psychology, and cellular biology. The real challenge is not the technical science: the challenge is translating these concepts into a framework that students can understand, and forging them into tools for future use on the test and as physicians.

As part of teams in both the pediatric clinic and the genetics lab, I engaged in a diverse set of responsibilities. In the clinic, I conducted patient visits, including blood draws, health education, and study enrollment. In the laboratory, I focused on sample handling, lab protocols, and data management. I also created multi-study clinical forms, laboratory paperwork, and promotional media, under the PI, Dr. Andrea Steck.

As a recitation instructor for Dr. Aimee Bernard, I was responsible for a weekly, 25-student lecture as part of General Genetics (BIOL 3832). For each week, I developed a lesson plan based upon class, write quizzes, and generate study material. I also held office hours each week, a chance for one-on-one interaction with students. I received high ratings from my students during both semesters of FCQ evaluations.
