Psychological performance has captivated me for years. As an introspective young soccer player, I would constantly analyze my performance on the field. I noticed how I would play better under certain coaches than others. I found that I played better closer to the fans than the bench. I realized that angry Kyle played better than anxious Kyle. Admittedly, all that analyzing probably led to more missed shots than trophies, but it fuelled my desire to learn more about the link between the brain and behaviour. What psychological factors give the best players an edge? I undertook a degree in honours psychology at Mount Allison University, completing research on psychological performance in basketball free throw shooting under supervision from Dr. Gene Ouellette. The research was later published in the Frontiers of Psychology and has been sought by leading high-performance teams and coaches.  Amid Covid-19, I met Dr. Jackie Kinley, a renowned psychiatrist and expert in resilience. I learned about the key facets of resilience. I was inspired by the concept of neuroplasticity – the idea that resilience is a developable capacity rather than a static trait. I learned about her ambitions to get upstream of clinical problems by empowering people with the skills to deal with stress and address the shortcomings of the mental health system. I joined Dr. Kinley’s company, AIR (the Atlantic Institute for Resilience) in 2020 and got to work on making that mission a reality.  The demands of working for a small business scratched an entrepreneurial itch and super-charged my learning. I worked with stakeholders to integrate Dr. Kinley’s assessment and curriculum into digital form. Since then, I have moved into an operational leadership role, developing AIR’s market, creating scalable systems, and navigating AIR’s growth in a dynamic environment. I have concurrently been undertaking an MBA at University of Fredericton with a speciality in innovation leadership. I have been fortunate to work with a passionate and collaborative team on this journey.
