I wrote and send out hurricane forecast bulletins to our clients in the insurance industry, in addition to daily briefings. We use these bulletins to highlight the capability of Athenium Analytics BeaconHurricane products for marketing purposes. It was during this time I covered over a dozen of devastating hurricanes with high costs to the insurance industry, from Hurricane Harvey of 2017 to Hurricane Ida of 2021. Our list of clients doubled in the five years that I was part of the BeaconHurricane project.I also performed daily quality control checks and cross-examined hourly rain accumulations with radar imagery to ensure measurements were accurate for outdoor events that are insured. I worked on a brief project involving a re-analysis of tornado damage paths using ArcGIS. I combed through weather archives, collected information, and constructed GIS shapefiles containing the damage severity of past high-profile tornadoes for our client, Aon Insurance.

I provided weather forecasts and updates for 75,000+ followers in nine western North Carolina counties through Facebook, Twitter, and company’s website. I also created weather graphics to post on our social media pages to communicate ongoing threats with the public, especially during severe, tropical, and winter weather events. Occasionally, I also assisted with emergency weather briefings, forecasts, and updates for the Emergency Management office of McDowell County, North Carolina. Highlights include an extreme flooding event of Carolinas region from Hurricane Joaquin and a historic snowstorm in January 2016 when up to 20 inches of snow fell in McDowell County.

GSMRGN is the network of high-elevation rain gauges in Great Smoky Mountains National Park of western North Carolina. GSMRGN rain gauges serve as ground truth instrument for several satellite-based meteorology researches going back to mid-2000s. They include projects by NASA, NOAA, and Duke University.I was an assistant to Dr. Douglas Miller. My job was to clean parts, replace lithium batteries, run calibration tests, and download CSV and raw data files for UNCA Atmospheric Sciences Department and their partners to use as part of their ongoing research projects. We often hike more than several miles to these rain gauges in remote areas of Great Smoky Mountains National Park.

After finishing in top 25 out of 2,000 competitors and leading UNC Asheville forecasting team to Tobacco Cup victory over NC State, UNC Charlotte, and East Carolina, I was hired to manage the team for my senior year of college. I put together the forecasting team’s roster, recruited new students into the team, taught couple sessions on forecasting techniques, and provided frequent updates on the WxChallenge competition. Under my guidance at this position, many younger members improved their score.

I assisted Dr. Douglas Miller on Sounding-based Experiment on Mixed Precipitation Events (SEMPE) project. I joined the project during my sophomore year and stayed on as a member of this team throughout my college career. This project was an effort to better understand the impact of the Southern Appalachian Mountains on meteorological events forced by synoptic-scale features. To do this, we conduct weather balloon launches during major wintry events affecting the city of Asheville. We also conduct launches at the request of National Weather Service weather forecast office in Greer, SC, for an extra upper air data support during abnormal regional weather events. My job was to prepare radiosondes, ensure weather balloons are full of helium and ready to go, write down the data into the project's journal, and to conduct weather balloon launches during weather events.

I conducted a research project on wind gust climatology of eastern North Carolina to discover daily and seasonal trends along the Outer Banks. My data were used to improve performance for public, aviation, and fire weather forecasts through National Weather Service’s Advanced Weather Interactive Processing System (AWIPS) and Graphical Forecast Editor (GFE) smart tools. When not researching, I shadowed NWS employees for many hours ranging from assisting them with public, aviation, fire, and marine weather forecasts to launching weather balloons. I also assisted the office’s science and operations officer with tropical cyclone report on Tropical Storm Colin that was sent to National Hurricane Center. I worked several evening shifts with NWS forecasters during severe and marine weather events by tracking individual storms and collecting storm reports from social media.
