I am responsible for monitoring state legislative matters affecting operations, primarily state fee schedules for medical records. To advance company initiatives I engage contract lobbyists who assist in developing a lobbying plan and executing it. My specific role also includes being a subject matter expert offering written and oral testimony on medical records issues. In most cases this involves negotiating and drafting legislation. In order to advance corporate initiatives, I spearhead grassroots campaigns directly with hospitals and various associations. In the role of corporate counsel, I provide legal support to operations on the intricacies of HIPAA and various state laws. I also negotiate and revise various business contracts when needed.

As the General Counsel and only attorney at Coosawatee I was the only legal resource for the general manager and board of directors. As a result, I handled whatever legal issues walked through the door. The issues were varied and interesting including issues like complying with the Federal Clean Water Act, pursuing fraudulent transfer act claims, enforcing restrictive covenants, and maintaining collections. I was also responsible for reducing legal expenditures, which meant personally handling association litigation.

I came from an in-house position where I managed premise liability litigation so while I had not been first chair in litigation matters prior to this position, I had a very good grasp of the litigation process. Hence, I was immediately entrusted to handle client communications, develop litigation strategy, draft motions and represent the client at hearings. I can honestly say I believe every attorney should work for a law firm at some point in their career as the experience is invaluable.

I am forever thankful to have experienced this in-house position recently out of law school. This experience helped pave the path for my legal career by helping me realize that I found tremendous professional fulfillment from bringing the legal department and business units together to advance best practices for company improvement. Working in-house forced me to figure out a way to say “yes” to the business while acknowledging and limiting risk. This strategic exercise is something I don’t think you fully appreciate working in a law where you may not get to see corporate initiatives through to completion. Another great aspect of this position that I am forever grateful for is it was my first experience interacting directly with the business leaders in the C-suite. This regular exposure to the C-suite at such an early point in my career was tremendous for my confidence.
