Teaching Military & Strategic Studies to over 400 USAFA cadets, acting as academic advisor and mentor both in an out of the classroomEvaluated multiple, graduate-level team competitions in Crisis Management and Negotiation Exercise (CENEX) an annual, professional simulation run by University of Denver graduate students at the Josef Korbel School of International Studies. Inspired cadets who attended CENEX to run their own crisis management simulation at USAFA. Helped tailor the scenario and provided expertise in his role as the facilitator of naval forces and White Cell (referee/evaluator) coordinator. Rewrote orientation and training program for new instructors and arranged for prominent guest speakers, like Dr. Christopher Hill, former Ambassador to Iraq and South Korea to challenge and engage faculty and students.

Managed and directed 100+ person division, including eight mid-level managers and three supervisorsReformed four watch teams in three months after a 90% turnover in personnel.Directed over 5000 hours of training, 66% increase in manning, 87% advancement rate and 90% retention rate.Crisis Project Manager for Haitian earthquake relief, Operation Unified Response in January 2010. Hand-picked to lead CVN-70’s efforts at Guantanamo Bay overseeing the efforts of dozens of coordinators in charge of various base responsibilities including personnel processing and berthing for hundreds of civilian volunteers and military members. Team also organized logistics for relief supplies and thousands of disaster relief workers transiting to and from Haiti. Efforts included transport and briefing of executive level decision makers, both at Guantanamo and in Haiti.

As CSO, coordinated all efforts of a cross-functional staff of 82 military personnel and 96 civilians to meet the needs of 8 organizations, including budgeting, succession planning, operational and program management. Involved in all aspects of hiring six civilian government employees, including writing job descriptions, interviewing and obtaining funding.As Wing Safety Officer: Managed the safety and physical security programs for 8 organizations.Conceptualized, manned and supervised operations for first-ever Helicopter Coordination Center directing Navy and Marine Corps assets to support federal, state and local agencies fighting 2007 San Diego wildfires. Tasks included scheduling water-bucket helicopters, relaying fire line surveillance and progression to on-scene, firefighting commanders, and various logistics flights.Chaired an investigation of an aircrew’s professional performance after a flight mishap, during a Field Naval Aviator Evaluation Board (FNAEB). Findings brought to light several changes in how Navy helicopters trained to improve emergency procedures and flight safety, which were quickly implemented Navy wide.

Taught strategy and Operational Planning processPrograms included Pacific HOSTAC, Personnel Recovery, and Joint Task Force 519.Projects included Operation Unified Assistance (tsunami relief 2004), helicopter ship modification of USNS StocktonTaught strategy and operational planning process as part of Commander Pacific Fleet’s Multinational Planner Augmentation Team (MPAT) to staff members and officers manning Joint Task Force organizations at top executive levels.Directed multi-national emergency and crisis management operations including medical evacuations, search and rescue efforts, regional exercises, counter-piracy and Humanitarian Assistance/Disaster relief for 2004 tsunami relief in Indonesia.Chaired the Navy program that standardizes helicopter operations off ships from 13 different Pacific nations and 12 Department of Defense agencies. Duties included budgeting Title 10 funds and organizing/running annual conferences.Orchestrated three multi-national conferences in Japan, Hawaii and New Zealand, supported through Title 10 funding.Coordinated with Military Sealift Command and ten Navy commands to modify USNS STOCKHOLM to embark a Navy helicopter detachment in support of Emerging Maritime Interdiction Operations (EMIO) missions with Marine and Special Forces assets. Worked with civilian engineers to fabricate a helicopter hanger, install servicing, fueling and fire-fighting equipment and design communication, command and control elements to plan and implement EMIO strategies and operations.

As Operations Officer, Managed flight operations and operational budget of a 300+ personnel organization. Optimized $400,000 squadron annual flight hour budget, safely completing over 540 missions.As Safety Officer:Provided asset coordination, safety planning and on-site leadership in support of production and filming of major motion picture “Tears of the Sun” during week-long shoot in Hawaii using Navy helicopters.Managed 6 mid-level managers, two supervisors and 30 operations and safety personnel. Integrated Risk Management Program that was instrumental in meeting 60,000 mishap free flight-hour milestone.Received the highest grade of “Outstanding” during Type Commander Safety Survey, noted as the “best safety program ever seen.”

Air Operations Manager, surveillance Subject Matter Expert, watch stander trainerManaged over 2800 mishap-free flight hours for 16 multinational helicopter detachments during deployment to Arabian Gulf and a major multinational exercise near Hawaii. Created a letter of instruction detailing how senior level executives managed fleet level area of responsibilities. Developed laser training and safety program responsible for increasing battle group readiness for seven organizations.Demonstrated critical, in-depth tactical knowledge during preparations for the undersea (submarine and mine hunting) portion of the highly successful Sea Combat Commander (SCC) Seminar, which was attended by executive level representatives from over ten ABERAHAM LINCOLN Battle Group commands and the Integrated Undersea Surveillance System (IUSS) community from San Diego, Hawaii and Japan.

As lead tactics instructor, established weapons tactics instructor course based on the Top Gun model, standing up the course that trains all helicopter, tactics instructors for the entire Navy.Managed and developed curriculum consisting of over 40 tactical lessons, simulations and live exercises across multiple communities to create first ever Navy Helicopter Weapons and Tactics Instructor course.Led training development team at unit and fleet levels creating challenging simulations and live events, methods of training, grading criteria and evaluation methods.Authored and solicited professional articles, as editor of DATUM Magazine, the Under Sea Warfare (USW) and Anti-Surface (SUW) warfare community’s classified, tactical forum.Planned and obtained funding for two major naval aviation training products, MQRC and Measures of Performance / Measures of Effectiveness (MOP / MOE). These products support advanced tactical training for squadrons, the Weapons Tactics Instructor (WTI) program (train the trainer) and TEAM training (multiple air and ship assets up to large scale fleet exercises).

First fleet flying tour. Flew over 1200 mishap free hours in SH-60B during several deployments.As Detachment Five’s maintenance Officer, management skills directly resulted in outstanding marks during the AIRLANT Maintenance Management Team evaluation.Leadership and mentorship resulted in detachment’s 100% retention rate with four reenlistments.As Detachment Operations Officer, received the highest grade of “Outstanding” during the airwing’s pre-deployment operational readiness inspection of his detachment.Planned, recruited and lead high-visibility community relations projects in Bulgaria, Romania and Israel including painting a blood donation center, visiting orphanages and providing goodwill supplies. Coordinated with 6th Fleet Chaplin Corps, embassy personnel and local directors. Earned Navy Achievement Medal for leading volunteers and enabling this successful effort.
