More than 45 years of professional experience in diverse roles ranging from public health expert and clinician. I have played a leadership role in planning as well as implementation of primary health care services in the field and in formulating national policies and their implementation at national level in various national health programs. A proven record of unprecedented accomplishment of expanding DOTS programme to provide quality diagnostic and treatment services to >1.2 billion population by March 2006. Have been an active member and contributor to international TB control policy development while serving on various WHO and Stop TB Partnership committees, notably Technical Advisory Group (STAG), DOTS Expansion Working Group and TB/HIV core Group. Have contributed to the development of International Standards for TB Care (ISTC) and been a major contributor to WHO publication “Addressing Poverty in TB Control: Options for National TB Control Program and co-author of the book “Tuberculosis Control in India”. Motivated large number of stakeholders including NGOs, private practitioners, medical college fraternity, government sectors outside the Ministry of Health & Family Welfare in the implementation of national programs such as e.g. TB, Leprosy, Integrated Disease Surveillance Programme (IDSP) and human resource development in the field of epidemiology, microbiology and entomology. As Director National Center of Disease Control (NCDC), New Delhi, a premier Public Health Institute of Government of India, led the Institute in the development of various national programs for implementation during 12th Five Year Plan e.g. prevention and control of anti-microbial resistance (AMR), surveillance of viral hepatitis, prevention and control of leptospirosis and prevention of human deaths due to rabies. The Institute played its role in disaster preparedness and response to biological disasters and public health emergencies of both national and international concern such as during H1N1 Pandemic, EBOLA Viral Disease outbreak to mention. Planned and implemented activities in the development of core capacities including human resource, public health laboratories and strengthening of disease surveillance to help in effective implementation of IHR-2005. Supported states in disease outbreak investigations and responding with appropriate interventions for control. Conducted regular surveillance of major communicable diseases and maintained vigil over emerging infectious diseases and planned response accordingly.
