My Program Leadership PhilosophyI understand that achieving program success requires more than the application of methodologies. While the foundations of the project management profession are built on these processes, and the teams I build need to be skilled and experienced in their application, I philosophically know that successful programs are led, not just managed. I know that this effective Program Leadership requires more than satisfying the compulsion to direct and control every individual task and activity in a program. I believe that the best results are achieved when I can create a positive and effective program environment where the entire team understands the program’s intent, and everyone collectively works to deliver it. To do this I will endeavor to extract, examine and execute my sponsor’s intent continually throughout the life of the project. I understand it is essential to manage time, cost and scope criteria but my thinking is not constrained by them. I create value by delivering outcomes and solutions not just documentation. I believe that programs ultimately exist to implement an organisation’s strategy; however, I also understand that strategy cannot remain static. I therefore manage the progression of projects and strategy in unison. To achieve this, I will continually measure and assess the benefits each project and adjust my approach to maximise the benefit they bring to an organisation. I know that best practice program management needs to use evolving digital solutions to automatically gather, analyse and extrapolate project control data to gain insights and manage risks. More importantly I believe that the use of this digital technology can deliver continuous situational awareness to all program stakeholders and facilitate better communication and engagement. Finally, to deliver on this I know that the people in my project team need to be expert communicators. I define success by the extent of understanding and engagement across the program environment and encourage my team to personalise their communication strategies to achieve this outcome. I also understand that this engagement must extend beyond the immediate program environment and actively engage with the broader community.By encouraging my team to deliver programs under this philosophy I will aim to leave a legacy not just through the infrastructure we build, but with all the people involved in our projects.
