Steven managed the Full Service Schools program, the reform model for eleven of the District of Columbia's thirteen public middle schools. The FSS model helped schools establish systems to ensure all students receive the academic and behavioral supports necessary for success. The program was a major factor in the improvement of DCPS middle schools between 2008 and 2012. To achieve its goals, the program provided comprehensive supports to improve school culture, behavior management, instruction, leadership and collaboration, SPED inclusion, mental health services, data management, and parent engagement.

While enrolled in business school, Steven worked on strategic initiatives with several education management organizations. Through his work, Steven helped charter networks build growth models and set strategy for teacher recruitment.

Steven spent his summer internship at Huron where he gained valuable experience in analyzing management challenges, setting strategy, and investing clients in change. His work included new business development for Huron and technology strategy for research universities.

As Director of Programs, Steven directed the instructional and non-instructional programs at Tertulia, a K-8 bilingual charter school. Through his work, Tertulia improved instructional programs and business processes, integrated student achievement data into planning, overcame critical operational challenges, and enhanced college-bound programs.

During his third year of teaching, Steven led Tertulia's school improvement initiative. In this role, Steven executed improvements to teacher training and collaboration and led the initiative to develop the school's spanish language standards. By the end of Steven's year as school improvement director, the middle school had improved its state rating from "underperforming" to "performing" and the elementary school improved from "underperforming" to "performing plus."

As Tertulia's math and science teacher, Steven taught and developed curriculum for three grades and two subjects. Steven's accomplishments included 40% gains by his math classes, the presentation of his laboratory procedures at the National Conference for Bilingual Education (NABE), and the development of a standards-based grading system.

In 2004, Steven was selected as a Teach For America corps member and joined the Phoenix corps. As a second year corps member, Steven led the science content team and presented his methods for performance-based assessment at regional conferences. As content team leader, Steven designed the professional development and collaboration for approximately twenty first and second year science teachers.

Steven volunteered weekly for UCLA Special Olympics for the duration of his time at UCLA. As director, Steven organized the program's first annual soccer tournament, introduced summer programming, and expanded the program's participation in competitions throughout Southern California. Prior to graduation, Steven published the story commemorating the program's 25th anniversary in "Spirit," the national magazine for Special Olympics.
