Assisted in the writeup of the Green Economy Report. Reviewed, researched and analysed Bid Specification documents from various departments to provide reports on procurement policy so that the departments can procure sustainable environmentally friendly products. Created an Excel tool to evaluate green products for BID Specification processes. Communicate with stakeholders regarding Green Procurement to maintain networks and improve linkage synergy. Assisted with setup and arrangements of the Green Procurement workshop. Assisted with a project to create a municipal funding facility from the Development Bank of Southern Africa to help drive longer term loans for local government to invest in Resilient Sustainable Infrastructure. Assisted in the organisations of the Alien Biomass Expo which brought together private, public and financing institutions to grow the industry.

I was involved in the curation analysis and setup of the 2016 to 2018 waste data tables. Furthermore, I created Excel Analytical tools to bulk extract data from a variety of sources that resulted in populating dynamic Excel tables and graphs. This data was subsequently used in many interdepartmental reports. In one such major report (State of Waste Report) I assisted with the writeup, creation of infographics and collation of table and graphs.

Assisted in the development of the Tourism Blue Flag Project budget, planning and procedures. Responsible for managing 100 Beach Stewards within the Western Cape. Blue Flag Beach auditing and monitoring. Skills include payroll management; conflict management; stakeholder engagement (local/district municipalities and NGOs); designing and implementing environmentally related awareness initiatives; recruiting staff (shortlisting and interviews); survey development; water quality and survey data analyses; spreadsheet development; facilitating accredited training sessions. The Stewards conducted 107 awareness programmes during my employment as the Project coordinator.

Duties included liaising with relevant municipalities; coordinating compliance checks in line with Blue Flag criteria; updating Blue Flag protocols; dealing with queries and complaints from the public to ensure beach sites maintain Blue Flag standards; responsible for water sampling database and statistical analyses and Blue Flag Beach auditing and monitoring.

Duties included assisting clients to register/report waste on the “Integrated Pollutant and Waste Information System” (IPWIS) and trouble-shooting their system challenges; applying working knowledge of waste regulations to effectively communicate with IPWIS users; assisting with organisation/setup of IPWIS workshops and meetings with local municipalities and healthcare practitioners; improving the data collection tool used by municipal disposal and diversion facilities; assisting with conceptual development of IPWIS functionality; reviewing and commenting on waste- and pollution-related legislation and Environmental Impact Assessments.

Overstrand Municipality

One of my core functions was to assist in the management of the Onrus, Bot/Kleinmond and Klein River Estuaries located within the Overstrand Municipality. My duties included overseeing the chemical and bacteriological water-quality of the rivers, and contributing to the development of a Reed Maintenance/Management Plan for areas along the Bot/Kleinmond River estuaries. I was also involved in the Bot/Kleinmond and Klein River forums where I presented and interpreted the bacteriological data through Microsoft Excel and helped stakeholders within the forums to understand the data and its origins. I was responsible for developing a Standard Operating Procedure for a “sewage overflow response” plan for spills resulting from failing infrastructure. I also developed signage to increase public awareness of microbial indicators and water quality within estuaries and coastal waters. In addition to the above, I also supervised alien vegetation clearing of the surrounding areas and assisted with various task related to the day-to-day running of the Fernkloof Nature Reserve. I was also involved with the BlueFlag programme. This programme raises public awareness through the BlueFlag standards by promoting conservation and environmental education initiatives. My duties included monitoring of beaches within the Overstrand Municipality and the City of Cape Town to determine whether beaches met the BlueFlag criteria. I was also involved with various environmental education and awareness raising programmes and campaigns related to BlueFlag beaches e.g. I conceived and coordinated with a number of NGOs and local government to raise awareness around the impacts associated with discarded fishing line. With the help of volunteers, I also facilitated the erection of fishing line bins on the Hermanus coastline in response to the above. Furthermore, I assisted the BlueFlag coastal coordinator with drafting a proposal for the “Green Coast” initiative.
