About Lance Horn

The Undersea Vehicles Program (UVP) support undersea research with a variety of robotic vehicles. A Phantom S2 Remotely Operated Vehicle (ROV) has been the workhorse of the Program for 26 years, however, we just brought a new SubAtlantic Mohawk ROV on line. It uses fiber optic technology and supports HD video, 10Mp digital still camera, and a 5-function manipulator. These vehicles provide georeferenced video and digital still photography documentation and sample collection for a variety of scientific objectives including:• Multibeam Ground Truth• Habitat Characterization• Marine Archeology• Biological Behavior Monitoring• Site Reconnaissance UVP also operates a Slocum glider Autonomous Underwater Vehicle (AUV) for the collection of physical ocean water data.Mission StatementThe Undersea Vehicles Program at the University of North Carolina at Wilmington is dedicated to providing efficient undersea intervention with experienced remotely operated vehicle and autonomous underwater vehicle (AUV) support. With over 26 years of conducting undersea research, the UVP team possesses the skills and knowledge required to perform extensive end-to-end mission coordination and logistics, professional vehicle operations, and quality data collection. UVP is uniquely qualified to provide access to, and expertise associated with specialized ocean exploration and research vehicles, systems, and sensors to conduct ocean exploration, research, training, and technology development.

    2009-Present Operations Director, Undersea Vehicles Program: Primarily responsible for managing the Undersea Vehicles Program including three remotely operated vehicles and a Slocum glider AUV. Responsible for capitalizing assets, fostering intra-NOAA and extramural collaborations, and pursuing technology to keep assets on the cutting edge of in situ marine science. Participates in at-sea activities as Mission Coordinator, AUV supervisor/technician, and Chief ROV pilot/technician.2005-2008 AUV Team Leader/Technician: Served as team leader of a three person team to bring an Explorer class autonomous underwater vehicle (AUV) with 2200 meter depth capability from concept to operational readiness. Completed bid specification, bid award, responsible for multi-year budget, and management of the project. Delivered the completed project to National Institute of Undersea Science and Technology (NIUST) at the University of Southern Mississippi. 1996-2009 Operations Manager, National Undersea Research Center/UNCW: Responsible for the management of Center operations personnel and activities including underwater vehicles, diving, operational analysis and review of scientific proposals, cruise and budget planning. 1987-Present Chief Remotely Operated Vehicle Pilot: Responsible for the operation and management of the Program’s two remotely operated vehicles including budget management, vehicle upgrades, equipment integration, science coordination/logistics, and maintenance. Since 1987, the Center’s Phantom S2 ROV system has performed 2,085 dives for a total of 2,481 hours of bottom time. 1985-1987 Surface Supply Diver/Engineer on Research Vessel Seahawk: Performed surface supply diving operations including diver, tender, decompression chamber operator and inside tender. Served as crew on UNCW’s R/V Seahawk including vessel maintenance, anchor watch, underway watch, and chief engineer.
