Many of them were unable, in those early stages, to speak about what they had experienced, but their voices found a home in the art they created. The majority of these individuals had never picked up a paintbrush before. They might not have been artists, but somehow, these women and men shared an understanding of the freedom and perspective that art can provide. Many of the people who shared their stories with me agreed that having had access to an artistic outlet or community was incredibly instrumental in their healing from the pain of physical, sexual, and emotional abuse. Lani is so attuned to this reality as it applies to her work within the therapeutic community and I believe that this awareness is a large part of the incredible value that she brings to her relationships with both her clients and colleagues.
