I was fortunate to have started in fiber optics in 1977. Being a part of this dynamic industry has been exciting. To watch new technologies and products being invented, developed and implemented has opened many doors.After working at Tektronix with the Test and Measurement team I found a need to provide vendor neutral high quality training and founded The Light Brigade in 1986. After writing over twenty courses, ten certifications, a few books I sold the company in 2018. Currently I am a member of various technology committees, write articles for several publications and provide fiber optic expertise worldwide. Over the years I have been fortunate to have interviewed many of the fiber optic luminaries including 2009 Nobel Prize winner Charles Kao which the digitally filmed interview is sold by the IEEE. The history and evolution of the fiber industry continues to be an amazing story and Charley's story led the way. In 2008 I founded FiberStory to archive historical content and interviews with those who play(ed) a part of this wonderful technology. He continues to research and write about this amazing industry and welcomes hearing from you, your stories and appreciate photos of your experiences.Thanks to all the mentors who guided and taught me, some have passed regretfully, but all are remembered. PresidentFiberstory 2009 - PresentWherever Fiber Optic Technology Has Been Or Will Be ImplementedI started following the history of fiber optics in 1987. Little did I know where it would lead me. In 2000 I started work on a video called the History of Fiber Optics to celebrate the 25th anniversary of the first fiber optic installation. That lead to working with great writers like Jeff Hecht, David Chaffee, Stephen Hardy and many others. It also allowed me access to meet luminaries like Charles Kao, Tingye Li, Kathleen Maiman, most of the Tyndall award winners and hundreds of others who through their efforts have developed the components and systems we use for fiber optics. It has let me travel the world and visit sights and meet with many wonderful people.In 2008, I separated all History related content from The Light Brigade to allow it to focus on fiber optic education, while FiberStory would address the history story and content. Today our archives hold digital interviews, historic photos, and products. For those who have a story to share, drop me a line, send your photos (and even old products).

Director And FounderThe Light Brigade, Inc 1986 - PresentStarting a company is unique. The name Light Brigade refers to a team of specialist in the fiber optic industry. They were friends, co-workers, and business associates. In 1987, I focused on filling a training gap in the fiber industry. Teaching others how to design, install, test and maintain fiber optic communication systems from components through systems was exciting. Now we are developing a series of E-learning courses which opens another exciting door of opportunities. By teaching others and building their comfort with the technology I have seen this industry grow. The number we have trained is now over 50,000!This need for technical advances never changes, it is constantly expanding and evolving. Having created over twenty courses and certifications has been exciting, but also hard work. It is also a task that needs constant updating and industry interaction. Writing technical content or scripts used in video products, traveling worldwide to learn about and from others is a reward that I am so thankful for.
