Wavvox, a Bay Area company, has developed technology for Audio Codes based on spread spectrum. The technology is patent pending and is implemented in both software and hardware. The tech consists of both near ultrasonic and inband codes. The primary applications are proximity detection and interactivity with streaming media.Ultra Codes are near ultra-sonic frequency (19KHz) signals transmitted between mobile devices using the existing speakers and microphones in the devices. The signals are based on CDMA (spread spectrum) and instead of RF the operating frequencies are in the audio range (but inaudible). Payload data rates are in the 100’s of bits/sec with a phone to phone range up to 20 meters. In addition a PA system can transmit Ultra Codes to the audience in a stadium, arena, concert hall, or outdoor festival with a range of 100 meters.The Ultra Codes provide for proximity detection (discovery), peer (many to many) networking, communications with things (as in the Internet of Things), distance ranging, indoor location , and contactless payments. Implementations and APIs are available for this cross platform technology on Android/iOS and an extremely low power, low cost (< $1) chip to be used in a (bi-directional) beacon, an IOT device, or a vertical market device (e.g. an LED light stick or bracelet for live events). This technology fits in with and/or replaces NFC, Bluetooth, WiFi-Direct, and QR codes.The technology also consists of Inband Codes, where the operating frequency is 3KHz. In this case an Encoder is required which spectrally shapes the codes and embeds them 6 to 12dB below the spectrum of the carrier audio using psycho-acoustic principles and other algorithms.
