In this role I prepare eighty low-income 12th grade students for post-secondary education by providing Advanced Placement instruction to all students; I also provide writing remediation to fifty-six high-need 9th grade students. I implement Positive Behavior Interventions and Supports (PBIS) and Restorative Discipline practices to ensure equity and fairness for all learners, and I collaborate with colleagues to develop scaffolded curriculum and plan differentiated lessons to meet needs of all learners.

I devise engaging lessons that meet the varied needs of all students. I work collaboratively with coworkers to construct curriculum, create assessments, and analyze data to ensure that all students are mastering the standards. I foster positive relationships with all students and create a safe learning environment where students are comfortable questioning, sharing, and working together.

YES Prep Public Schools serves low income, minority students throughout Houston. As the eleventh grade English teacher at the Southwest Campus I am responsible for planning and implementing rigorous, engaging, and aligned lessons. The curriculum focuses on challenging world literature from a variety of genres, writing development, and grammar instruction. Students are held to high expectations both behaviorally and academically, and the juniors at Southwest consistently outperformed all other YES Campuses in district wide tests during the 2011-2012 and 2012-2013 school years.

As a student teacher I worked under practiced and master teachers to supplement their daily lessons and improve my teaching practice. Many of the typical teaching roles and responsibilities were split between my mentor teacher and myself, like grading, planning, and lesson delivery.
