I've always had a passion for food as far back as I can remember; one of my earliest memories is my Father and I bent over my Granny's recipe for wheaten bread trying to read her writing... still not convinced I use the correct quantity of flour! It is no wonder that in school my favourite subject was Home Economics. It was through chatting to my teacher one afternoon that I was inspired to study Dietetics at University. I thoroughly enjoyed my course and I increased my knowledge of health promotion, food science and psychology applied to health. In my first year of working in the NHS I gained experience in a variety of acute settings including Respiratory Medicine, Trauma and Orthopaedics, Stroke and Surgery before specialising in Intensive and High Dependency Care. This experience helped me prioritise my workload and deal with sensitive and often stressful situations.I was lucky enough to be able to have a career break back in 2019/2020 to follow my dream of traveling in South East Asia and Australia. However, due to the Covid-19 pandemic I decided to return home earlier than planned so I could assist the NHS during that turbulent time and locum in Intensive Care. After a few months I secured a permanent Band 6 role with my old NHS trust. I embraced the opportunity to work in Gastroenterology, Acute Medical Care and Cystic Fibrosis and unskilled my Eating Disorder and FODMAP knowledge.More recently, I have been managing a Dietitian team in Primary Care. I have enjoyed the new challenge of setting up a new Dietetic service, working closely with stakeholders, running group education sessions and providing holistic care to complex patients, in particular, those who usually do met criteria for local Dietetic input e.g. patients struggling with obesity, disordered eating or an eating disorder. I am passionate about teaching and run regular teaching sessions for nurses, doctors and other allied health care professionals. I love having the ability to translate scientific information about nutrition, food and disease to help educate individuals and promote health. I'm lucky enough to indulge this passion through lecturing and have experience lecturing at both the University of Southampton and Solent University, Southampton. I do run private Dietetic clinics and teaching sessions at sports clubs, community groups and Universities so please drop me a message if you want to know more or email dietitianlauramalone@gmail.com.
