During a period of furlough, I sought out and undertook pro bono consultancy for five Edinburgh-based charities seeking support to develop their business development strategy and corporate partnership proposition in response to Covid-19.This has included market opportunity research, proposition/product review and prospect identification, and my advice has already been used by one organisation to shape priorities for their insight team.

As Head of Business Development, I was responsible for managing a large team of Business Development, Events and Bids professionals who provided wide-ranging support for lawyers and their clients on a UK-wide basis. I worked with Divisional Directors and other Heads of Department to ensure the effective and timely delivery of the firm’s 2020 Strategy, and was responsible for ensuring the successful launch of the firm’s Singapore Office in 2019, including the delivery of year 1 targets. I was also responsible for overseeing the firm-wide Key Client Programme (which delivered significant revenue growth in the last financial year), growing and embedding the firm’s Sectoral Strategy and improving the firm’s Bid Win rate by 16% in one year. I led on the creation and delivery of a pitch to a global potential client, and supported lawyers across the firm on many more, leading on the creation of proposals, credentials and bids as well as client deliverables and reporting.I led the project team that secured the secured firm’s place on the Scottish Government's legal panel after 12 years, a key part of the firm’s 2020 Strategy. I also delivered on an overhaul of the firm’s Business Development Planning and Budget-setting process, and led on the launch and implementation of a pilot to decentralise Business Development resources, which has now been made permanent. I designed and delivered business development training across the firm, as well as providing group and one-to-one support at all levels from partners to trainees.I have been an active member of the firm’s Diversity & Inclusion Steering Committee, CSR Committee, Sustainability Committee and Collaboration & Best Practice Committee, which has included delivering an organisational review of the firm’s CSR programme, with recommendations, to the Board. My role on these committees also enabled me to ensure the firm visibly delivered excellence for clients through our values, policies, activities and partnerships.

As Senior Partnership Development Manager I managed a team of high-performing account managers who, in turn, managed some of the most exciting and transformational partnerships within the sector. This included our partnerships with Nationwide Building Society and Lloyds Banking Group, both of which are delivering real change for people affected by cancer throughout the UK by changing the way banking services and support are delivered for people facing potential financial crisis. My team also managed our partnership with PizzaExpress, which delivered nearly £1m of income in its first two years and provided Macmillan with a unique opportunity to expand our reach into the high street to ensure people affected by cancer know the support Macmillan can provide.I worked with colleagues across Macmillan on a number of cross-organisational projects, representing my department and our partners, and helping to identify opportunities to innovate new partnership models which can deliver change for people affected by cancer.

As Senior New Business Manager I was responsible for identifying and securing large, global industry-leading, shared-value partnerships with the private sector through which we could deliver transformational change for children. I managed a sub-team tasked with developing a pipeline of high-quality prospects within mostly B2B sectors, including Extractives, Insurance, Transport, Logistics and Construction.I worked with colleagues across the world, programme teams, high net worth individuals, existing partners and trustees to secure introductions and identify opportunities. Proactive, creative and passionate about the work that Save the Children does, I secured a seven-figure partnership in my first six months. I was particularly focused on securing six and seven-figure partnerships that deliver mutual benefit for both parties, particularly looking at how to create shared value relationships similar to our award-wining and innovative partnership with GlaxoSmithKline.As one of two Emergency Fundraising leads within our team, I also led the way on championing new approaches to seeking and securing private sector support. This included creating, developing and supporting on the delivery of an innovative 'experiential' event called 'Whatever it Takes' with Unilever which showcased Save the Children's Emergency Response work in a truly unique way, enabling us to develop even deeper engagement with partners and prospects. I managed our relationship with both British Airways and Virgin Atlantic, securing chartered flights and funding to support our response to Typhoon Hayian in 2013.

Merlin (Medical Emergency Relief International) was an international health charity, saving lives by responding to need in the world's toughest places. We worked in 16 countries providing access to healthcare for over 12 million people every year. As New Business Manager in the Partnership Funding team I was responsible for the creation and management of Merlin's Global New Business Strategy. Working with internal stakeholders, including country programme teams, I delivered focussed prospect research and innovative networking strategies in order to develop a pipeline of high quality prospects, successfully securing several new partners - including a six-figure multi-year gift from a lapsed donor and launching a cause-related marketing portfolio.I worked closely with colleagues in our programme and health teams, identifying corporate prospects to meet co-funding and strategic programme needs. I managed Merlin's relationship with our legal pro bono partner, and more broadly, Merlin’s gift-in-kind procurement process, working with colleagues across the world to identify needs, opportunities and partnership synergies.I was responsible for managing my team's income budget, producing budget reconciliations and performance reports. I also provided support across the organisation on contract drafting and negotiation and monitor compliance with Merlin’s Ethical Policy.

Maggie’s is a growing and hugely well-regarded charity that supports people living with cancer through a programme of emotional, practical and psychological support. As Corporate Partnerships Manager I was responsible for setting, delivering and growing Maggie’s corporate income budget, and for the account allocation, target and objective setting of a team of corporate partnership coordinators. I identified, championed and led on process and systems improvements within the corporate team and supported the development of Maggie’s corporate fundraising strategy.My role required me to secure new business through a variety of channels, including the development of a cause related marketing income stream, cold and warm prospecting, Charity of the Year applications, restricted funding applications and proposals. I was also personally responsible for managing several large corporate partnership accounts, including Maggie's largest partnership account worth over £2.6m to date, where I delivered year on year growth significantly above target. I was also a key internal consultant for other teams in the creation of proposals, asks and campaigns and successfully led a project to deliver an organisation-wide restricted funding and gift-in-kind strategy, along with creating associated processes and policies.In addition, due to my legal and commercial experience, I supported the business development, programme and communications teams with contract drafting and negotiation and with a wide variety of legal and best practice compliance and intellectual property issues.

Shepherd and Wedderburn LLP is a large UK law firm that provides corporate, public and private clients with a range of legal services.As a Corporate Finance Solicitor it was my responsibility to provide clear, concise and timely legal advice on a range of issues, including business sales and acquisitions, structural re-organisations and private equity investments. I also managed the training of a number of junior members of staff and ran an organisation-wide training programme on client relationship management.During my time at Shepherd and Wedderburn I became a key client contact and project manager of a number of multi-party, high profile and high value transactions, bringing aggregate fee income of nearly £1m into the firm.
