At the Maryland Women’s Business Center, I worked primarily as a business counselor – meeting one on one with clients to assist them with starting and growing their business. I helped people write business plans, research and pinpoint target markets, develop marketing and networking strategies, apply for loans and certifications, develop capability statements, and more. Every day was different – and I loved the challenges of working with small business owners. Another piece of my work at the MWBC involved the planning, organization and management of the annual women’s business plan competition, StartRight! I worked with a technical team to develop a microsite for online submission of the plans, engaged sponsors to fund the program, created and implemented a multi-faceted marketing plan, invited and assisted a panel of over 40 judges (local business professionals) to review and score the plans, and coordinated the awards luncheon where winners are announced at a gathering of over 800 people. I assisted competition entrants as they prepared their plans and met with them afterwards to share the feedback from the judges and help them edit their plans accordingly. I also managed the blog and social media presence for the MWBC.
