- Current research project focused on methane activation using metal-exchanged zeolites- Synthesized zeolites using methods to control the aluminum distribution in the catalyst to then influence the speciation of the charge balancing extra-framework cations.- Modified the synthesized zeolites to contain extra-framework copper cations and characterized the Cu-exchanged zeolites with site titration techniques, UV-Visible spectroscopy, X-ray absorption spectroscopy and Raman spectroscopy to determine the copper species present on the catalyst.- Established and validated experimental protocols to demonstrate that Cu-zeolites can facilitate the partial methane oxidation (PMO) reaction. After validation, then studied the influence of synthetic zeolite properties on the active site formation and yields for this stoichiometric oxidation reaction. - Designed and constructed custom-built continuous gas-phase reactor unit (with high pressure liquid feeds) for continuous PMO with customized GC protocols for various gas analyses. - Trained and supervised the research of an undergraduate student (now PhD student at Wisconsin) and current younger graduate student.- Served as the group’s safety officer requiring training of students, oversight of ordered chemicals, approval of MOC for instrumentation, and weekly safety updates for ~20 student research group
