From innovations in advance care planning and advancing illness to end-of-life care and Christian writing, my goal is to remove the fear of dying. We are all going to experience it, yet we are regularly too afraid to talk about it. That ends now. I have the privilege of breaking down the issues that lead to fear, whether it is in advance care planning presentations to medical school students, colleagues, or community members; through implementing The Surprise Question (would you be surprised if your patient died in the next six months) as a standard in two healthcare systems or speaking about its clinical trial to state- and region-wide hospice and palliative care conferences; by sitting next to a patient's loved one and working through end-of-life issues; or in writing about daily experiences that raise some of the larger questions. I am proud to be working for an agency that focuses on community members being able to live their best lives no matter what stage they are in.
