I have the privilege of breaking down the issues that lead to fear, whether it is in advance care planning presentations to medical school students, colleagues, or community members; through implementing The Surprise Question (would you be surprised if your patient died in the next six months) as a standard in two healthcare systems or speaking about its clinical trial to state- and region-wide hospice and palliative care conferences; by sitting next to a patient's loved one and working through end-of-life issues; or in writing about daily experiences that raise some of the larger questions. McManus-meets-Max Lucado (three of my favorite authors), I chose one of the seven deadly sins for each chapter, identified a Bible passage that highlighted that deadly sin, and then used daily experiences to help the reader understand that the Deadlies are as alive today as they have ever been. I oversee all advancing illness and end-of-life care and programs, from advance care planning (we proudly use Five Wishes, purchasing 10,000 copies of Five Wishes at a time--we have purchased nearly 80,000, thanks to the generous giving to the Memorial Foundation, and provide advance care planning in our community) to home health and hospice and palliative care to our inpatient hospice house called Cottage in the Meadow to our Spiritual Care program that boasts over 10 staff chaplains in our system to our Clinical Ethics and our Critical Incident Stress Management programs to our Grief Recovery work and beyond. We are the only hospital to implement The Surprise Question upon every patient admission thanks to the work of Compass Care.
