Laurel Eby is a Web Services Librarian at San José State University King Library. They possess expertise in information literacy, library instruction, library, libguides, editing and 11 more skills. They is proficient in Spanish, French and German. Colleagues describe them as "I give Laurel my highest recommendation as a technically-savvy and highly conscientious entry-level librarian. This recommendation is based on her Information Literacy/Reference internship under me in Fall 2009. She and two other interns followed the SJSU Observe/Assist/Solo model in library instruction, reference service, and development of instructional materials. First and foremost, Laurel is a conscious, reflective, and quick learner in these real-world workplace settings as evidenced by her intern blog entries. She works excellently with fellow interns and library employees, sharing and coordinating work and learning. She jumped into reference at our busy public/academic library refdesk, first to observe [astutely], and later to field questions from students and members of the public in person and via telephone. She was also intensely involved in our infolit instructional program, most closely with courses in the health professions. After she had observed, assisted, and delivered instruction in about ten sessions, I asked Laurel to coordinate information literacy instruction using a new active-learning method for a four-section general education course over two days. She came through with flying colors and the four sessions went well with all three interns sharing the instruction. In addition to this direct-patron contact, Laurel developed a screencast tutorial for students and other users about our interlibrary loan system and worked with me on our LibGuide for distance services. Laurel is fun, intelligent, and, obviously, reliable. I wish we had a place for her here at SJSU!
