I assist in fluoroscopic research in orthopedics to evaluate the movement or artificial joint implants during activities of daily living. Through this role, I have gained hands on experience overlaying CAD models to fluoroscopic images as well as with interfacing between the graduate and undergraduate levels to communicate needs and to complete assignments.

During my internship with Medtronic, I analyzed the basics of machining, including hands on experience with both Computer Numeric Controls (CNC) and manual mills and lathes as it applies to medical device prototyping in the manufacturing process. In this experience, I learned the importance of considering how a project will be manufactured during the design process to optimize the design time, production time, and overall cost. I also was able to gain experience with reverse engineering, and was able to follow my project through from concept to a finished prototype.

During my internship in the Medtronic Spinal Biologics department I was assigned a project of optimizing the lyophilization of bone-grafting putty. This required extensive research into the process and variables of lyophilization as well as testing of samples. During my internship, I was exposed to 3-D computer aided design (CAD), and developed Excel experience. I also was able to present my final project at a poster symposium to the department heads at the end of my internship.
