Laurie founded Synthesis Law in the East Bay to help companies of all sizes build their businesses and develop and protect their brands and other intellectual property. She was previously Senior Corporate Counsel at The Wine Group and responsible for all IP matters for the winery and its dozens of brands, including U.S. and foreign trademark and copyright clearance, registration, licensing, enforcement, litigation, IP due diligence, and rights of publicity. She also worked closely with the marketing, operations, IT, finance, hospitality, alcohol beverage compliance, and other departments to draft and negotiate contracts, review marketing materials and guide influencers, and provide practical business advice. Before joining TWG, Laurie was a partner at Duane Morris LLP in San Francisco, where she focused on all aspects of brand development, registration, and protection, including trademarks, copyrights, design patents, customs enforcement, gray market goods, and anti-counterfeiting. During that time, Laurie also taught U.S. trademark law as an adjunct professor at the Golden Gate University School of Law. She started her legal career at the intellectual property firm Townsend and Townsend and Crew (now Kilpatrick Townsend Stockton) where she honed her skills in trademark clearance, prosecution, counseling and litigation and other disputes – even the occasional judgment collection or ethics matter.
