Currently Distinguished Professor of English and Music at Fordham University, I was educated at the University of Pennsylvania and at Yale. In college I studied composition privately while spending three years producing public radio programs. I turned to composing many years later, primarily starting in 2007, after winning an international reputation as a musicologist. I'm the author of sixteen books on music, including The Thought of Music, winner of the 2017 ASCAP Foundation Virgil Thomson Award for Outstanding Music Criticism, and, most recently, Music and the Forms of Life. A new book, Experiencing Sound: The Sensation of Being, will be published in fall 2024. My compositions have been performed throughout America and Europe on concerts in New York, San Francisco, Santa Fe, London, Edinburgh, Oxford, Vienna, Krakow, Belgrade, Ghent, Stockholm, and Bern, among other venues. I have won competitions held by Composers Concordance, Hartford Opera Theater, Ensemble for These Times, The Arc Festival, The Composer’s Voice, and the New York City Contemporary Music Symposium.
