About Lawrence Ball

Lawrence's research examines ecosystem change in human-modified landscapes, with a focus on pastoralism in Dhofar, Oman, where his research informs strategies for sustainability and biodiversity conservation. He uses fieldwork methods, analytical techniques and theoretical and empirical knowledge from both the natural and social sciences to obtain an interdisciplinary understanding of conservation problems. He is currently involved in research at the Ohio State University which examines pastoralist mobility in arid rangelands using Dhofar as a case study system. His other research interests include remote sensing and geospatial analysis of landscape processes, plant and animal ecology, human and policy dimensions of global environmental change and dragonfly taxonomy. Lawrence's ESRC-funded PhD examined the social drivers and ecological impacts of pastoralism in Dhofar, Oman and was completed at the Durrell Institute of Conservation and Ecology (DICE), University of Kent. He has been involved in a number of overseas research expeditions in Africa, South America, Europe and the Middle East and recently featured in the conservation documentary 'Madagascar: Life on the Edge'.

Chief Scientist, Empty Quarter Expedition, Oman

Following the success of the 2012 expedition, I gained the position of chief scientist for the 2013 expedition. I was responsible for designing, coordinating and writing up a scientific programme that provided robust, reliable and peer-review standard results and sound evidence to assist conservation action, yet remain accessible to the citizen scientist expedition members. A broad range of surveys were employed to rapidly assess the biological communities in both desert and cloud forest ecosystems over 2 months. Together with the 2012 expedition we successfully record 31 butterfly species, 7,927 bird sightings (118 species) over 151 hours of surveys, 90 reptile individuals (15 species), 5 small mammal species, 844 trap nights of camera trap footage (14 large mammal species), 432 bat call recordings (4 species) and 903 dragonflies over 40 hours of survey time. Other responsibilities included budgeting for and sourcing scientific equipment, planning logistics, arranging meetings with Oman governmental bodies and internationally renowned scientists, undertaking a 10 day reconnaissance visit, training Omani government rangers and briefing and enthusing expedition members on science themes. Outputs include two 100+ page scientific reports on the biodiversity research, four national newspaper articles, two journal publications, two magazine articles and countless blog posts.

I helped to lead the science on this expedition to the Rub al Khali and Wadi Sayq in Dhofar, Oman. We undertook a 5 week rapid biodiversity assessment of Wadi Sayq with a personal focus on the dragonfly fauna. We employed the use of 19 camera traps and undertook herpetological, bird, small mammal and butterfly surveys. Responsible for writing up of science reports for Oman Government bodies, BSES and for scientific publication.
