Shenzhen Daily is an English-language newspaper that serves a diverse international readership in Shenzhen, a South China city of about 14 million. As one of two foreign staffers, I worked closely with Chinese reporters and editors to produce print, online and mobile content ranging from local and global news, features and business stories to regional events, arts, entertainment and travel. Duties included editing news stories, assisting with page layout and headlines, providing input on story placement and news content, and helping young journalists improve their work.I also wrote news stories and opinion columns, shot occasional photos and did freelance work for the parent company, Shenzhen Press Group. Freelance work included editing municipal websites, grant applications, diplomatic speeches, art collections, city information brochures and a government-funded book, “Top 10 Concepts of Shenzhen.”

Content manager for a lifestyle magazine for English-speaking visitors and residents in Shenzhen, Guangdong Province, China. Our franchise effort ultimately was not successful, but trying to start a business in a foreign country was an invaluable, eye-opening and very enjoyable experience.

As city editor from August 2007 to October 2009, managed day-to-day news operations for an editorial staff of 15 as the paper thrived on multiple fronts and won what was then its largest single-year accumulation of news awards in statewide contests.
 Directed daily news content in print and online, with duties including newsroom coordination; story selection, placement and photo decisions; website updates; community interaction; and development of long-term, multimedia projects. Filed stories, photos and blog posts from the 2008 Democratic National Convention in Denver.As a reporter for several years, I covered local, regional and state politics and government; environmental issues; water battles; economic development and stagnation; energy, in a coal mining community working to embrace renewables; education; business, in a resort-based economy with a world-class ski area and vibrant entrepreneurship; tourism; growth challenges, including a highly contentious annexation and real estate disputes; and public policy in a community of ranchers, miners, Olympic skiers and snowboarders, seasonal second-home owners and multi-generation locals. Also wrote features and a news column.Won 15 reporting awards from 2006-11 in annual contests held by Colorado press associations, including first-place awards in deadline news, special section, series, environmental story, education story, features and public service.

Internship earned as the 2005 recipient of the Damon Runyon Award from the Denver Press Club, given annually to one collegiate journalism student in Colorado.In an incredibly talented newsroom, I listened as much as I could while writing about politics, business and crime/police activity. I also wrote local features and two sections of an award-winning series on potential affects of a proposed statewide tax measure.My final project for the master's degree at the University of Colorado, a lengthy feature about area professionals doing daily battle with speech impediments, also was published in the Rocky, as a cover story for its weekly magazine.

While earning a master's degree in journalism at the University of Colorado in Boulder, I completed reporting internships at four Colorado newspapers. I covered local news for the Longmont Times-Call and Boulder Daily Camera; government and environmental issues for the rural Gunnison Country Times, in a summer internship awarded by the Colorado Press Association; and a session of the Colorado state Legislature for the Colorado Statesman, a weekly insider paper with an office steps away from the Capitol in Denver.
