National Council of Social Studies (NCSS) prepares students for college, career and civic life. We envision a world in which all students are educated and inspired for lifelong inquiry and informed civic action. Our mission is to advocate and build capacity for high-quality social studies by providing leadership, services, and support to educators. We are the largest professional association in the country devoted solely to social studies education. We support social studies teachers nationwide and in several countries in teaching students the content knowledge, intellectual skills and civic values necessary for fulfilling the duties of citizenship in a participatory democracy.The past few years have been a period of innovation and growth at NCSS. We have built partnerships with the Colonial Williamsburg Foundation, Newseum and C3 Teachers to co-sponsor our summer teaching institutes. We have more than doubled the Rho Kappa National Social Studies Honor Society, expanding its reach to over 600 chapters in 41 states and 4 countries.Prior to my work at NCSS, I built a career in teaching and education leadership, at the district, regional, and state levels. Implemented a $9 million, five-year state grant program which provided training and technical assistance to 144 school districts across nine regions.

Promoted into this newly created position to develop the Office of Educational Design and Technology. Coordinated policies, programs, and instructional resources to support learning technology integration throughout P-12 education and the University of the State of New York (USNY) in New York State. Major projects included development of New York State's virtual learning initiative for P-12 education (a competitive grant program funded through Race to the Top); coordination of P-12 school library services; implementation of NYS Common Core Learning Standards through technology; and service as State Readiness Coordinator for New York's transition to PARCC (computer-based) assessments. Developed and managed a $20 million competitive grant program (Race to the Top funds) for 17 Virtual Advanced Placement Programs in school districts and BOCES. Selected for and served in two consecutive interim leadership positions, while simultaneously serving as Coordinator of Technology Policy: Interim Director of Curriculum Services (2011); and Interim Chief of Student Support Services (2012). Represented the Commissioner of Education on state and national panels.

Served as a state curriculum and assessment specialist for New York's P-12 social studies education program. Major projects included the development and oversight of a $3.3 million character education grant program; coordination of the Board of Regents' Louis E. Yavner Awards for education about the Holocaust and other human rights violations; coordination of the U.S. Senate Youth Program; creation of web-based instructional resources and professional development workshops on social studies standards, curriculum, and assessments; and teacher training for state assessment (Regents examination) development committees.
