About Vanessa Layne

I work at the interface of technology and humanity. I write code, lead teams, plan projects, discover requirements, draft documentation, estimate budgets, hire staff, clarify goals, and solve problems. I explain, advise, consult, document, facilitate, instruct, interview, assess, experiment, implement, debug, debrief, and analyze. My primary technical domain is server-side web development, my primary fascination is how humans shape and are shaped by these virtual place-things of which the Internet consists.I am available for contracting and consulting opportunities, up to twenty hours per week. I am particularly interested in opportunities of these sorts:• Database design and data requirements discovery for small to mid-level development projects. Difficult clients a specialty.• ColdFusion or PHP web development contracts. PostgreSQL a specialty, MySQL and other dialects of SQL also OK.• Consulting to small businesses on feasibility, cost, and scope of web development projects. If you are concerned about being taken for a ride by developers, hire me to give you disinterested advice on what to expect, what to ask, and what is possible.• Consulting on the use of the internet for education, social change, research, and collaboration. • Development projects in and instruction on PostgreSQL's advanced features. Stored procedures, table inheritance, namespaces, and more.• Tech writing gigs, both specification drafting and documentation.• Coding gigs that allow me to further explore the Twilio API, angular.js, node.js, or, really, any language or technology that's new to me.

Listed skills include Web Development, Database Design, Postgresql, Javascript, and 6 others.

Web Toolsmith

Developer and internal consultant to web development projects throughout the organization. The organization is a non-profit science and math education R&D, that engages in a vast array of projects. Things I've done here include:• Architect and project lead on a custom CMS to provide top-shelf functionalities (disk caching, workflow, preview, custom asset types) at mid-level development price. PostgreSQL, ColdFusion, XHTML and Javascript.• Coded, refactored, installed, and tested on a variety of web development projects. • Consulted to HR and to managers on their technical staffing needs, defined jobs, interviewed and auditioned applicants. Advised HR and management on issues with technical staff, from professional development to promotions.• Consulted to projects on such topics as -- "How can the internet be used to cause off-line behavior change?"-- "What technologies for making surveys are middle-school girls acquainted with?"-- "How can we best represent the research data we wish to capture in a Filemaker Pro database?"-- "What are best practices in modularization of application layer and client-side code?"-- "What research questions could this type of website support?"-- "What are the security issues for a site to be used for student collaboration in 5th-to-8th grade classrooms?"-- "Given this budget, what collaboration technologies can we afford to include in this grant proposal? And how shall we specify them?"-- "How can I best to communicate with my non-technical manager about technological issues?"-- "What is the best database design for this project?"• Conducted presentations and trainings on technical topics for non-technical management and other staff.• Acted as an agent of change to catalyze cross-silo and cross-organization collegiality and mutual support among programmers and other technical staff.• Oriented new web development staff and provided technical support to developers.

Talent (Web Development And Office Automation)

Who was that masked programmer? As a temp specializing in short- and medium-term (1 day to 8 months) technology jobs, I came in, solved a problem, and left with happy clients in my wake.I'm a little hazy on when exactly I started temping through Aquent, but it wasn't called Aquent back then. It was MacTemps, and it was on Church Street in Harvard Square. In fact, I helped with the move to 711 Boylston St. and not so long after that I started getting work under their 1800NETWORK brand. I had started out as a "Word Processor" -- a glorified secretary -- but apparently you can't leave me alone with a system without my starting to automate it. I quickly moved into tech support, Filemaker Pro development, and Excel VBA custom add-in development, among other, odder jobs. But it was definitely under the Aquent brand that I got drafted into the dot-com boom to hand-code DHTML. It was a matter of weeks than then I found myself doing the client-side development for large Vignette StoryServer installs. Within the year, I had picked up Vignette Tcl template development and SQL (Oracle).Clients included:* Liberty International, Bermuda Group* MIT, Laboratory for Nuclear Science* Mainspring Consulting (acquired by IBM in 2001)* Forrester Research* First Church of Christ Scientist, Administration* TERC
