As an Advanced Nurse Practitioner in Health protection with substantial clinical and professional knowledge and experience, with advanced clinical skills and following national and departmental protocols, I undertake a comprehensive sexual and contraceptive history, examination and screening for sexually acquired infection from unselected symptomatic and asymptomatic male and female patients including bimanual and proctoscopy examinations; MSM, under 16s, CSWs and HIV positive patients; follow up syphilis patients, managing the sexual health needs and safeguarding issues arising with my own caseload of vulnerable patients and the shared caseload of high-risk or vulnerable patients within the specialist team. I undertake audits for service development, quality improvement, and service evaluation; teach internal and external candidates during clinics and for various teaching programs including Safeguarding level 3, and STIF and FSRH training.I am part of a specialist Sexual Health Information and Protection team, formed of 4 highly trained and skilled advanced nurse practitioners who also function as health advisors. The role serves as a joint health advisor and nurse practitioner role, and as such I am trained for each of these aspects and am working towards the SSHA competencies. The team is responsible for seeing all patients attending the sexual health clinic under the age of 18 and in our specialist young persons’ clinic, using the Fraser/Gillick guidelines to assess competency. My role includes managing young people’s sexual health and contraceptive needs in our specialist clinic and general walk in clinics, assessing for wider risk factors, safeguarding needs, and vulnerabilities, and onward management or referral. This forms a large part of my role within the Jefferiss Wing, and I have a passion for working with young people. As a contraceptive trained nurse prescriber, I independently manage patients within the service and refer onwards where appropriate.

I contributed to various aspects of the sexual health research programme which is led by Dr Julia Bailey at the UCL eHealth Unit. Developed comprehensive content for the Contraception Choices website, collaborating closely with the research team to ensure accurate and user-friendly information on various contraceptive methods. I assisted with conducting systematic reviews of digital interventions; interviewing and focus group facilitation and data analysis; assisting with drafting and submitting papers for publication; the preparation of presentations; and assisting with dissemination of research findings in ways which are accessible to non-scientists (e.g. infographics, Tweets, blogs etc.). In my role I managed the care of patients in a community family planning setting, in a nurse led setting, for their contraceptive needs. I assessed for all methods of contraception, and referred to other clinicians for IUS/IUD/SDI insertions.

With advanced clinical skills and using national and departmental protocols I independently undertook a comprehensive sexual and contraceptive history, examination and screening for sexually acquired infection from unselected symptomatic and asymptomatic male and female patients. My role also included, but was not limited to: venepuncture; male and female genital examination; health promotion in outreach settings and within the clinic environment; HIV pre-test discussion; partner notification; prescribing and supply of medications; cryotherapy treatment; bimanual examinations; diagnosis of STIs; and sexual health promotion targeted towards specific client groups, and delivering health promotion in clinic and an outreach setting. I referred to external services such as sexual dysfunction, vulval pain and psychosexual services within the department and externally - and to senior clinicians, should complex situations arise and a patient requires a medical review. I undertook numerous departmental audits and presented my findings at clinical-governance and pan-directorate meetings. These have resulted in streamlining and revising processes and policies within the department, such as screening for asymptomatic patients. I am passionate about service development, reflected in my undertaking of audits, in order to provide the highest standard of care possible for patients. I have guest lectured at the University of Hertfordshire for second year nursing student nurses on the topic of Health Promotion, which was rated very highly in evaluation from the students and I have been invited to lecture in the near future.
