On August 18, 2021, I sent an email that changed the course of my life. As I arrived at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill for my first year in Fall 2021, I hoped I would find a passion that would carry over into a career I would love. I was a business major, thinking that was the only route to success. I knew I wanted to get involved and imprint myself at Carolina but didn't exactly know how. One day, I came across an Instagram account for UNC Women's Soccer's student managers, @yellowisthenewblack.ws, and it clicked... This was where I was meant to be. I sent them a message, and they told me to shoot an email over to the team's director of operations. As soon as I became a manager for UNC Women's Soccer and caught a quick glimpse of what the sports industry looked like, I never turned back. I knew that there was a multitude of opportunities in this space, but I had no idea what they were until I was accepted into the Hussman School of Journalism and Media.I discovered one could work in sport marketing and advertising, sport public relations, sport journalism, sport strategy and so much more. It seemed like an endless world of possibility. I even declared the Sport Administration major my junior year at UNC to further emphasize my interest in sports. But even with many distinct roles, how would I know what path was right for me? The best answer I can give you is that if I had time in my schedule, I tried to explore everywhere I could... Student managing with UNC Women's Soccer and the Winston-Salem Dash's Game Day Internship Program highlighted the collaborative, multifaceted world of operations. The Tournament's Events Internship presented a fast-paced, unpredictable facility and event management sector when developing TST and TBT 2024. Sport Promotions Group's Event Sales and Marketing Internship showed off the financial and business development side of sport, promoting and advertising products for major brands in the ECNL NL and RL, Girls Academy, NPL, etc. To round things off, the Carolina Hurricanes will introduce me to the PR sphere in professional sports on NHL game nights. Now, as I work through my senior year at UNC, the future remains unclear. But, because I sent that email back in August 2021, I know my passion is in sports, and my purpose in the industry will one day reveal itself.
