I worked within the Strain Development group at ReBio Technologies Ltd, a second generation bioprocess company developing micro-organisms that transform renewable feedstocks or industrial by-products into high value biofuels and biochemicals. My role within the group was to perform genetic engineering of Geobacillus thermoglucosidasius. I was also the company's Biological Safety Officer so was responsible for implementing the biological and GM policies and procedures.

I worked within the Strain Engineering group on strain development projects. I was responsible for performing the genetic engineering of Geobacillus thermoglucosidasius, primarily performing gene knockouts. When I first joined the company I was responsible for generating mutant strains by chemical mutagenesis.

Oxford

I worked in the Viral Vector Core Facility producing recombinant viral vector vaccines for pre-clinical testing. I was responsible for generating recombinant adenoviruses by transfecting plasmid DNA into T-REx 293 cells and then amplifying the virus before purifying it using caesium chloride gradients and ultracentrifugation. The presence of the correct antigen was then tested for by PCR. I was responsible for supervising a QC technican within the group.

I worked as a research scientist on new antibacterial drug discovery programmes. I was responsible for testing compounds in antibacterial and solubility assays and preparing datasheets for communicating results with colleagues. In addition I undertook the further microbiological characterization of key compounds using time-kill experiments, resistance frequencies and characterization of resistant mutants. I worked in the biopharmaceutical analytical development group, part of the Biopharmaceutical Centre of Excellence for Drug Discovery at GSK. The position involved carrying out analytical assays including Oligosaccharide Profiling and Monosaccharide Composition Analysis using normal phase HPLC and non-glycosylated heavy chain (NGHC) analysis using an Agilent Bioanalyser. I also developed an oligosaccharide characterization technique using a MALDI-ToF mass spectrometer.
