Some Tasmanians have fewer human rights than others. And no voice to demand their rights. That situation is unacceptable.Being older, living with disability or mental health issues, or using alcohol/drugs should not affect the rights we have. None of us should have less choice, fewer options and poorer services just because of our life circumstances. None of us should lack a voice to demand our rights. But all too often this is what happens in Tasmania. Having no rights and no voice, makes us powerless. As CEO at Your say Advocacy Tasmania, I lead a committed team working to change this situation. We work to give a voice to our clients, to empower individuals, to secure their rights and to change systems that adversely impact our clients’ lives. Sometimes we do this behind the scenes by providing information and options so that our clients can speak for themselves. Sometimes they ask us to act to resolve issues for them, so we act for them. Other times, when systems are so entrenched, too complex or unwilling to change and the power imbalance is so vast, we help get clients’ stories out to all Tasmanians. We raise injustices and we keep going until we see change. Your say Advocacy Tasmania is all about our clients and what they want. We’re fiercely independent of all other organisations. Empowering Tasmanians is what we do. We make a difference in Tasmanians’ lives.
