About Lee Amison

When I finished school I enrolled in to a 2 year construction course at Cauldon College, Stoke which I passed. My main ambition at the time of this course was to gain an apprenticeship on site in order to gain crucial on the job experience. Unfortunately, this never came to fruition as during the 2 year course, the building trade took a huge nose dive so many firms weren't able to take on an apprentice. As I passed my course, the building trade had not recovered so finding work or any firm to give me a chance was near on impossible as I had no on site experience. Even though the end goal wasn't achieved, looking back, the whole experience of being at college and learning new skills I feel set me on my way in life. Following this I took on various bit part jobs through agency's. Eventually I found myself at BAE systems (Radway green) where I spent 3 years helping to manufacture ammunition where I worked various shift patterns. I mainly worked in a QC role using gauges and various measuring devices and was also trained to operate various press and guillotine machines. After 3 years service, the cell that I was working in was unfortunately shut down with no other positions available for agency staff such as myself. Before the cell was actually closed, I very tentatively applied for a role at Olympus engineering, where to my surprise, I was offered the role as a CNC machinist. Olympus - Here I spent 8 years. I started as a complete novice to the CNC world and went on to operate machines which produced parts for JCB, Serck, Hydraforce and Bentley amongst many others. The work was very precise, down to .005mm tolerances in some cases. I learnt how to read technical drawings, operate numerous precision CNC machines, change and set tooling and also went on to setting/resetting full jobs on machines. I also learnt how to use many different gauges such as Vernier's, Micrometers, dial indicators and basic knowledge on how to run CMM machines during many periods where I worked within the inspection department. I eventually went on to earn my NVQ level 3 diploma in mechanical manufacturing. Following this and 4 years down the line, I earned a new role as team leader of the Bentley department which consisted of 6 team members. My roll was then increased to take on Serck and JCB products where I lead around 11 team member's. In my final 18 months at Olympus I took on the role of team leader for Hydraforce which were Olympus' biggest customer. In this role I managed approximately 25 team members. Following this, i moved to Stairbox as a Workshop manager.

  • Olympus Engineering
    Production Operative/Team Leader
    Olympus Engineering Jul 2010 - Jul 2018
    Stoke-On-Trent, England, United Kingdom
I applied at Olympus having very minimal knowledge of CNC's and engineering experience from my time at BAE. Luckily and after much perseverance I was offered a role as a CNC operator where I would be trained from scratch. The role would also naturally require the need to learn how to read technical drawings and use various different types of measuring equipment.
  • Bae Systems
    Production Operator
    Bae Systems Apr 2007 - Jun 2010
    Radway Green, England, United Kingdom
I worked for 3 years at BAE systems at Radway green following on from a 2 year college course in construction. Unfortunately as I finished my college course, the building trade took a huge nose dive and I was unable to gain any onsite experience. Instead of waiting for the trade to pick up again, I applied for any full time roles I could and fortunately I ended up at BAE. During my time at BAE I worked days and noon's. I worked on various manufacturing machines and was then elevated in to a quality inspection role. Unfortunately after 3 years, the section that I was working in had to close and I was to be laid off along side many others as there were no other positions available. Fortunately I found my next job before being let go.
