About Lee Hooper

I am a National Institute for Health Research Career Development Fellow, working on ways to identify early dehydration in older people. For more details of the Dehydration Recognition in our Elders study (DRIE) see http://driestudy.appspot.com/index.html.I have a strong established reputation as a systematic reviewer, including publications in the BMJ and Cochrane Library and editorships of three journals. The impacts of my research include:* systematic reviews on the effect of dietary change on cardiovascular health have been instrumental in developing UK health policy (eg, ‘Securing Our Future Health: Taking a Long-Term View - the Wanless Report’ (DH 2002) and ‘Salt and Health’ (SACN 2003, the basis for current UK policy of salt reduction in processed foods), Hooper et al, BMJ 2002. * publication of a groundbreaking systematic review to assess the effects of omega 3 fats from fish and plant sources on mortality, cardiovascular outcomes and cancers, Hooper et al, BMJ 2006. * Lee led development and publication of the first evidence based guidelines authorised by the British Dietetic Association, and two more recent updates Hooper et al, J. Hum Nutr Dietetics 2001, 2004, 2006. My reputation for primary research in the area of food and older people is growing, as evidenced by my Career Development Fellowship and previous funded projects for which I was primary investigator from the Economic and Social Research Council and Norfolk County Council. I am an editor of ‘Quality in Ageing’, and have been awarded significant funding through several sources including a key role in an EU project, EURRECA.

She is an expert systematic reviewer and has developed and managed many systematic reviews. Lee has been an editor for the Cochrane Heart Group for 10 years, and was an editor of the Cochrane Oral Health Group for 5 years, and regularly referees systematic reviews for top medical and nutrition journals. Lee works as a Senior Lecturer in Research Synthesis and Nutrition in the Norwich Medical School at the University of East Anglia and has a BSc in Biochemistry, PhD (University of Manchester) and current dietetic registration. She worked as a dietitian in the National Health Service for ten years, with extensive experience of community health promotion and cardiovascular health. Lee moved to research in 2000 and has since published over 60 peer-reviewed publications, mainly in the area of the effects of dietary change on health. Her publications have been cited over 1700 times (with an average citation per publication of over 27, and h-index of 20, see http://www.researcherid.com/rid/D-2795-2009). Lee is a member of the World Health Organization Nutrition Guidance Expert Advisory Group (NUGAG), with advice and support in systematic reviewing methodology. As well as being a Cochrane editor, she is an editor of Quality in Aging, was awarded Ibex Award by British Dietetic Association (2005), and was a member of the National Institute for Clinical Excellence (NICE) Partners Council.
