My work research understands the role digital intermediaries (such as social media) has in political life. From how social media has changed our perceptions of representation; to political abuse; and the politics of content moderation. My research has been published across a range of high-impact journals, presented at multiple conferences, and have a wide list of media engagements in this area.Alongside this, I work on the PSA's Technology, Internet, & Policy (TIP) Committee to create a network of academics, practitioners, campaigners, journalists, and others with an interest in technology, the internet, and policy. We seek to promote academic engagement in policy debates and discourse that impact civil society, in particular by facilitating the exchange of ideas between academia and practitioners from various fields. Postdoctoral Research FellowBirkbeck, University Of London Oct 2020 - Sep 2021London, England, United KingdomThe role was part of the Localizing Content Governance, a systematic study into how Administrators and Moderators govern contributions in Facebook Groups relating to named places (e.g. villages, towns, neighbourhoods). Local Facebook Groups are comparatively open forms of neighbourhood-based social media, in which users can create, join and contribute to multiple Groups, tied to different geographical scales or topics. Such Groups are popular and growing: some have thousands of members with hundreds of daily contributions. While they can be vibrant arenas of constructive local discourse, local Facebook Groups also often host polarised exchanges, harmful content and even the possibility of offline harm. Focusing on 16 active place-named Facebook Groups in and around London, UK, this study will combine qualitative and data analytics approaches towards an original and focused analysis of how Administrators and Moderators govern content. This project is funded by a grant from Facebook Research. -
