I just completed a yearlong residency creating and directing a program in Political Theater at Harpswell Coastal Academy, a Maine Charter School dedicated to creating an engaged community of creative thinkers, compassionate leaders, and effective problem solvers and am once again available for freelance directing, acting, or teaching positions. For almost 50 years, I've taught classes in all aspects of theater, literature, writing and interdisciplinary fine arts including acting, directing, theater history, design, stagecraft, public speaking, art and technology, critical studies, and the business of the arts. I've acted on stage, film, and television, and directed and stage managed productions Off and Off-Off Broadway in New York and for regional, university, and community theaters across the country. I earned my MFA in Theater at the California Institute of the Arts, my BA in English Literature at Union College, and as a certified Secondary English Language Arts and Adult Education teacher, have conducted Professional Development workshops for other educators. A native New Yorker, I moved with my then young family to Maine in 1998 to develop the Interdisciplinary Fine Arts Program at the University of Maine at Machias and have since taught at the College of the Atlantic, The Maine School of Science and Mathematics, and at other High Schools and Adult Education programs in Maine. Outside of the theater, I'm a proud dad of two grown sons with Jody my wife of 35 years. I'm an avid outdoorsman with a particular love for kayaking, skiing, and softball, and I have a special interest in things scientific, especially astronomy, biology, and computers.“To laugh often and much; to win the respect of the intelligent people and the affection of children; to earn the appreciation of honest critics and endure the betrayal of false friends; to appreciate beauty; to find the beauty in others; to leave the world a bit better whether by a healthy child, a garden patch, or a redeemed social condition; to know that one life has breathed easier because you lived here. This is to have succeeded.” ― Ralph Waldo Emerson

Director, Actor, Teacher Of TheaterFreelance Jul 2022 - PresentAs a director I'm particularly interested in mounting contemporary plays that have social relevance to my community and classical ones in exciting new ways designed to both engage and challenge audiences. As a teacher, my classes go beyond practical skills to focus on developing critical thinking and problem solving abilities. My favorite playwrights are Tom Stoppard, Caryl Churchill, Christopher Durang, Tennessee Williams, and William Shakespeare. As member of AEA and SAG, I've acted in New York, on national tours, and in England, performing on stage, television, film, and in music videos. I've stage-managed Off and Off-Off-Broadway including productions of "The Importance of Being Earnest" starring Cherry Jones and "The Taming of the Shrew" directed by Julie Taymor. Representative projects include a modern remote streaming update of Orson Welles' "War of the Worlds," a contemporary, video-enhanced Twelfth Night, a staged pop-up book of Ionesco’s Rhinoceros, performing in WNET/Thirteen (NY)’s "Slavery and the Making of America" and AC/DC's "Fly on the Wall," and as Hook in Peter Pan. I sing and play guitar, and my original comedy Agency was performed at Opera House Arts in Stonington, Maine.

Performer/EducatorTales Told Jun 2005 - Jun 2021With my wife Jody Rose, we developed educational experiences for high school and college students by using the rich history and culture of rural Downeast Maine as our learning lab. We're dedicated to the advancement of adolescent and digital literacy and perform and conduct workshops at schools, libraries, and community gathering places. Most recently, under the auspices of the Maine Arts Commission SMART Grant Program, Tales Told created an interdisciplinary educational project that blends film, theater, oral history, and explorations into community and cultural identity. Jody and Lee worked with the Cobscook Community Learning Center, Passamaquoddy historian Donald Soctomah, and Maine Coast Heritage Trust historian Deirdre Whitehead to create an experiential learning project for students in the CCLC’s Community Year Alternative High School.
