Brunswick, Me, Us

As a director I'm particularly interested in mounting contemporary plays that have social relevance to my community and classical ones in exciting new ways designed to both engage and challenge audiences. As a teacher, my classes go beyond practical skills to focus on developing critical thinking and problem solving abilities. My favorite playwrights are Tom Stoppard, Caryl Churchill, Christopher Durang, Tennessee Williams, and William Shakespeare. As member of AEA and SAG, I've acted in New York, on national tours, and in England, performing on stage, television, film, and in music videos. I've stage-managed Off and Off-Off-Broadway including productions of "The Importance of Being Earnest" starring Cherry Jones and "The Taming of the Shrew" directed by Julie Taymor. Representative projects include a modern remote streaming update of Orson Welles' "War of the Worlds," a contemporary, video-enhanced Twelfth Night, a staged pop-up book of Ionesco’s Rhinoceros, performing in WNET/Thirteen (NY)’s "Slavery and the Making of America" and AC/DC's "Fly on the Wall," and as Hook in Peter Pan. I sing and play guitar, and my original comedy Agency was performed at Opera House Arts in Stonington, Maine.

Directed productions of Patrick Hamilton's "Gaslight" (aka Angel Street), and a modern update of Orson Welles' "War of the Worlds" in addition to teaching classes in all aspects of theater and public speaking.

With my wife Jody Rose, we developed educational experiences for high school and college students by using the rich history and culture of rural Downeast Maine as our learning lab. We're dedicated to the advancement of adolescent and digital literacy and perform and conduct workshops at schools, libraries, and community gathering places. Most recently, under the auspices of the Maine Arts Commission SMART Grant Program, Tales Told created an interdisciplinary educational project that blends film, theater, oral history, and explorations into community and cultural identity. Jody and Lee worked with the Cobscook Community Learning Center, Passamaquoddy historian Donald Soctomah, and Maine Coast Heritage Trust historian Deirdre Whitehead to create an experiential learning project for students in the CCLC’s Community Year Alternative High School.

Machias, Maine

As the Curriculum Specialist at Washington County Adult Ed./Axiom Educational and Training and the National Digital Equity Center in Machias, Maine, Lee developed and taught classes in Digital Literacy, Adult Education, Professional Development, Experiential Learning, and College and Career Readiness programs in venues as diverse as the Downeast Correctional Facility and Washington County Jail, Washington County Community College and the University of Maine at Machias, and for public schools, libraries, and community centers here in rural Washington County, Maine.

Directed David Auburn's "Proof."

Environmental Theatre, Political Theatre and Theatrical Politics, and produced an environmental treatment of Ibsen's An Enemy of the People.

Lee didn't just teach theatre and theatre majors. He established a theatre program that taught for all students communication and collaboration; sensitivity to one’s environment and to one’s fellows; organization and structure; and how to make real one’s creative, emotional and intellectual impulses.In six years of entries in the Kennedy Center American College Theatre Festival, Lee's productions were held over five times. He presented workshops on theatre sound at KCACTF and at the New England Theatre Conference and on online teaching for the University of Maine System.Elsewhere on campus, particularly as Chair of the Academic Affairs Committee, Lee focused his attention on developing policies on assessment and academic integrity, fought to include contemporary pedagogy in course and program development, was a campus leader in the use of instructional technology, and urged his colleagues toward interdisciplinary collaboration in all things.

Taught Directing, Beginning and Advanced Acting including Voice and Movement for the Actor, Scene Study, Stage Management, Theatre History, and Speech Communication. Produced and directed mainstage and laboratory productions. Performed as Equity Guest Artist in mainstage productions. Served on committee to design and build a new Theatre teaching/performing facility. Developed consortium of local collegiate and university theatre training programs. Development and Project Director of The Arts Partners Residency Program. Sponsored by a major grant from the Lila Wallace-Reader's Digest Foundation; brought the internationally acclaimed Bread & Puppet Theatre and its Artistic Director Peter Schumann to Union for an extended residency dedicated to audience development and the building of community relations through the performing arts.

Taught Acting Theory and Practice, Advanced Acting, Movement for Actors, and Development of Theatre I and II ("Aeschylus to Shakespeare" and "Ibsen to The Present"), Video & Film Concepts, Film History, American Film, Scene Study and Public Speaking. Produced and directed Off-Off Broadway Project and mainstage productions. Performed in faculty-directed productions.

Taught Acting for Non-majors and workshops in Auditioning, Playing Style, Juggling, Stage Combat, Makeup, and The Rehearsal Process. Performed in student and faculty-directed productions.
