Teaching Assistant
CurrentAs a student demonstrator, I supervise and assist with various undergraduate chemistry labs. This involves being aware of health and safety protocol, providing support to students, and marking where required. I am 1 of 2 third-year chemists brought up to do this role, which is usually reserved for postgraduates and 4th year MChem students.
Subject Rep
CurrentAward-winning student representative for my cohort. Being voted into the position by my peers, my responsibilities include:- Receiving student feedback and reporting it to faculty, both informally and at Board of Studies meetings- Maintaining positive lines of communication between students and staff- Helping to connect the department with the School of Engineering and Applied Sciences through attendance at Student Staff Forums- Sitting on Student Staff Forums on Singleton Campus in order to comment on campus life
Deputy Senior Outreach Intern
I was part of a team that facilitated daily visits to our wet lab by various schools and colleges. I played an active role in supporting and supervising the students that come into the lab, taking primary supervision over many groups of students at a time. I was responsible for making sure the students adhere to lab safety protocols as well as quickly dealing with accidents as and when they occur. As well as this, I was a constant line of contact between regular and senior interns - able to answer questions and help other interns on the fly whilst also making sure the students in my care are attended to.
Chemistry Society President
I served as head of an award-winning committee of chemistry students. During my time as President I:- Wrote agendas and chaired fortnightly meetings to develop ideas and debrief events.- Revitalized the student society membership to 140 members, and set up active lines of communication with the Student's Union.- Had a hand in the organization of society events and socials, ranging from casual trips to the pub to a weekend Hook a Duck stall at the Swansea Science Festival.- Participated and expanded the society's outreach programme with help from the department, involving trips to local underprivileged schools to perform lab experiments.- Was awarded the opportunity to attend the ACS Leadership Development Institute in Atlanta, GA in order to network with other student leaders and learn valuable skills.- Gained partial funding from the ACS to send 4 committee members to the Spring 2024 National Meeting in New Orleans, LA.- Assisted in running the society's social media, creating posts to advertise events.- Sat on RSC local section meetings to update the wider chemical community on society activities.
Outreach Intern
I was responsible for overseeing groups of students from Year 7-12 as they performed various experiments in a chemistry wet lab. I kept track of several groups of students simultaneously, ensuring they completed the experiment safely and efficiently.
Events Tech/Crew
CurrentWorking within a team to set up/run/pack down various events held on campus, including Swansea Come Dancing, the Welsh Varsity, and Swansea Summer Ball.I also operate the sound system for weekly karaoke and open mic nights at JCs, the student bar.
Research Intern
Working in an analytical lab in order to investigate the longevity of treated beetroot solutions - a potential and safer alternative to traditional cleaning products.
Senior Open Day Chemistry Ambassador
I volunteered regularly for the department on Open Day events - this involved:- Prompt setup of experiments for prospective students to participate in- Assistance of students during the experiment.- Fostering open and active communication between prospective and current undergraduates to hopefully convince them to attend the university to study Chemistry.
House Leadership Team
I was placed in charge of organizing my house's entry for the school's biennial House Music competition. This involved co-ordinating 8 individual teams of students aged 11-18 simultaneously in order to put on a 45 minute performance involving an orchestral piece, a soloist, a close harmony, and a Year 7 song.I lead team meetings with non-musical groups (banner-making, drama, dance, etc) and lead rehearsals with 4 musical teams over the span of 3 months.
