To gain insight as to the causes and locations of jet noise, as a means to reduce it, this research project will involve the use of Computational Fluid Dynamics (CFD) simulations, under the guidance of the faculty mentor. These simulations will model supersonic plug nozzles, and the flow coming out from their exhausts, and run from an in-house code developed by the advisor on the PETE supercomputer. To calibrate the program and confirm its accuracy, the program will be run using the same measurements and conditions as have been used by NASA. It’s important to note that, while NASA has data already on jet noise, as this project will rely on, this data is far-field, since they haven’t enough research on where specifically the sound comes from. Nonetheless, the program, being anchored in NASA’s measurements, will be able to show specifically how the sound from jets is being created. Further analysis is necessary to assess the simulation data, and this will be done using state-of-the-art software.
