Mentor/Head Of Inclusion
Walworth Academy: as a Learning Mentor, the role incorporates pastoral, academic and behaviour support responsibilities; I am also a Year 10 form tutor. On a day-to-day basis I am responsible for managing the KS4 internal referral unit in accordance with the Academy Behaviour Policy, running KS4 boys’ mentoring groups, and I work as part of the KS4 Pastoral team on the on-call rota as well as in the Learning Support and Inclusion Team, which offers one-to-one mentoring of targeted students and in-class support for students returning from exclusion. The first aspect of my current role involves dealing with students who are referred to the unit for a period of reflection following an incident in class, as part of the behavior on call system, or for a fixed term exclusion of up to five days. In the first instance, I encourage students to reflect on their behaviour and to set personal targets using a pastoral support plan (PSP). I am passionate about young people achieving their full potential and I have consistently high expectations of students, encouraging them to focus on the long term goal of a minimum 7 A*-C at GCSE, but setting them interim SMARRT targets as a framework within which to work. I add the extra ‘R’ because I record all objectives set, so that there is a working agreement between the students and the Academy. Where students are referred to the Unit for a fixed period, I organise the setting of work for students and oversee the completion of their work in all subjects, as well as supporting the reintegration process following an exclusion by supporting students in class for their first few lessons.
